The death of 'celebrity culture?'

I really hope that this year's Big Brother celebrity wannabes will emerge not only to the realisation that their sad hunger for instant fame has cost them the opportunity to revel in the most glorious two weeks of National pride in most of our lifetimes, but into a country that now recognises that success is borne out of hard work & dedication, not by simply spending three months on our television screens representing some of the worst traits of humanity?

Wouldn't it be fantastic if, as a result of these glorious Olympic games, the people of this great country now reject the recent adulation of nobodys who are simply famous for being famous & instead are inspired to aim for success themselves in the 'old fashioned' way, & consign the revolting 'celebs' that grace the front of the gossip magazines back to obscurity, where they belong!

It won't happen, people are obsessed with who is sleeping with who and will feed the celebrity machine and then stand and protest about it.

You only have to use this site contributors as an example, people slate Kyle, Katie Price, Cowell and all his programmes, Murdoch and his trash papers.... but who bought these top selling, most _iewed programmes... the masses. Then some, NOTE SOME try and pretend they don't watch/read such rubbish to self elevate to a different intellectual level. Who the fuck does read/watch them.

it's all a game of pretending to be someone other than the person you are, much like the clambering would be celebs.

I know, of course you're right - the monster of celebrity is unfortunately fed by the lowest common denominator of this country, & they seem to outnumber the rest of us... but it was a nice thought while it lasted.

Its a wonderful ideal to imagine that people will look back at these olympics and say that London 2012 was their inspiration and for some of our future outstanding athletes im sure that will be the case and i hope the country will continue to motivate and encourage the next generations

The celebrity culture will always be there though and there is always going to be people that feel that instant success for doing nothing is the way to go

The thing with unsubstantiated instant success is that it can disappear just as instantly leaving instant forgettfulness, unlike all of our heroes from team GB

Crete or LANCASTER

Don't watch it.

Dont read about it.

Dont talk about it.

Then it will go away.

What there is a celebrity big brother still?

It won't change anything. Most people will be unable to remember more than a handful of medalists names or even the sports they won in within a few weeks. The media will quickly bore of the minority sports and go back to reporting football and portraying the lives of nonentities as news worthy.

I think a lot of celebrities are inspiring to many and good on them.

A lot have a fantastic work ethic, are kind to people who may have been dealt a harder deck in life and really try and achieve the best in whatever they do.

Completly agree, it seems there are lots of genuine lovely celebs (and i count david beckham in this) and its the idiots like wayne rooney and katie price that spoil it, however if people didnt buy the rubbish there in then they would just fade away. You cant really blame them for milking it when people will pay to watch or read about them. I mean look at bloody jedward, why are they still on the television, cause some poor idiots want to see them

I agree with you when this is the case as they then show that they can be more than just a celebrity. I have an issue with those, however, that are famous for being famous for being or doing something completely trivial which require no particular skill. I had a lot of empathy with Jade Goody when she was diagnosed with cancer and subsequently died - however I did not rate her as being deserving of celebrity status prior to that if that makes sense.

They may regret it on the other hand there are millions who aren't sport orientated at all. I think all that went in will probably make the same decision given it again, I wouldn't personally deny them their small slice of fame for some who are not athletically or intellectually gifted it may be their highlight of their early years after all we all have different things in life that make us happy.

the very minor celebs know they have a short shelf life and try to make as much money before their star dims.... and I don't think there is anything wrong with that. I think it is a shame if a youngster thinks their only ambition in life is 'celebrity' but that may be the lack of great parenting rather than the fault of Simon Cowell.

I dont have a problem with anybody seizing an opportunity to make money providing it is legal and not hurting anybody else. And you are right of course in that we are what we are with all the voices and influences from our upbringing - and ultimately I have a choice to watch or not watch them. True!

Wayne Rooney is not a celebrity in the same sense as John and Edward are celebrities. Wayne Rooney is known as a Premier league footballer before anything else. John and Edward are famous for...

Question: what do they do?

Absolutely, but they aren't the people I was alluding to in my post, sorry if I didn't make myself clear. I meant the likes of Kerry Catona, the TOWIE plebs & the rest of the motley bunch that I see on the covers of the depressing publications like More & Best & ... oh I don't know their names, I never read the bloody things! What have they, or are they ever likely to, put back into society? Celebrities who use their fame to do good are superb & I applaud their positive contributions, no matter how they have achieved their fame - more power to them! It's the other lot who have an unquenchable hunger for constant publicity but who give absolutely nothing back to society that I have an issue with. Deep breath... and relax....

There's been a general dumbing down in the media and popular culture for 20 years or so. The media give the public what they think the public want and the public lap up what the media give them because for some of them its easier to sit in front of the television and let that shit wash over them than actually think for themselves. Other companies that make products also tap into this. It's an ever decreasing spiral.

I find most reality TV quite educational, every time it comes on I read a book
