I actually didn't have any in my school at all. We were taught the biology of reproduction and that was essentially it. Think condoms may have been briefly mentioned in form 6 but only as a deterrent against pregnancy and AIDS, not how to use or anything useful.

It's something that should be taught in schools, my parents told me nothing. Think a more rounded approach should be given not just the fundamentals of reproduction and how to use birth control.

That STIs can be passed through oral sex.

About HPV and the cervical cancer risk.

I think it would have also been helpful for sex education to cover things like UTIs, thrush and BV.

Maybe talk about potential sexual problems like erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, inadequate vaginal lubricantion or painful sex and things to help with these.

Also talk about how sex isn't just for men!!

I know mine was very basic, no positive reinforcement of homosexuality, consent, different gender and sexual identities, the risks, ramifications and responsibilities of sexual activity (pregnancy and STD’s), confirmation that everyones bits may look different (and thats ok and not an excuse for bullying behaviour), that sex can be fun and enjoyable and isn’t just for procreation, that enjoying sex isn't a bad thing

Was pretty concise, could have been more about STDs.

I think the important stuff that needs (and probably is, it's been a while) taught these days is relationship stuff. Consent, spotting red flags, reading about others' experiences (not bedroom experiences!) and learning that studio pornography is not real life and is filmed entertainment like any other and isn't something that you are expected to be like.

We had the video of a woman and girl walking down the hall and a man and boy walking down the hall to show the bodies development. I can't remember what else from school, but my mum sat me down with my (3years older brother) and went through the basics when I was 11! I think my brother had already played around by that point

My daughter is in year 6 and still hasn't learnt anything about actual sex from school...

Just personal hygiene, basic anatomy and reproduction and respecting of others personal space.

So I bought a book off amazon and we went through it together with me expanding on topics and her asking questions.

The only Sex Ed I received was at the age of 15 when in a Religion class our form tutor told us he’d take us into town so we can watch gay men kissing down the back streets. Truly abhorrent teaching and completely and utterly useless. So the way we learned was clandestine to say the least and pretty harmful.

Catholic schools didn’t believe in sex education as it was considered a mortal sin if you did anything before marriage. And then procreation was the only purpose.

I think it's important for people - particularly girls - to know the correct words for their anatomy. We don't shy away from talking about knees or ankles, why do we with clitorises (hmm, what is the plural of clitoris?!) or vulvas?

"That STIs can be passed through oral sex.

This would be a good start!

I think talking about menstruation would be good too"

oh we got the menstruation talk in primary school but they took the boys out the class for it , like it was some shameful girls secret

then at lunch the boys pinched the samples of pads the girls were given (presumably tampons were also shameful) and stuck them to peoples backs

"We were given a book in biology to look at, that was literally it.

I saw the video they showed the then year 6's (6 years ago ish), clearly labelled cartoon people which morphed into actual people. I remember being a little shocked when they spoke about the clitorus. Not because I'm a prude or anything, I just thought ' is it important for an 11 year old to know that'!

I think it's important for people - particularly girls - to know the correct words for their anatomy. We don't shy away from talking about knees or ankles, why do we with clitorises (hmm, what is the plural of clitoris?!) or vulvas? "

also i vividly remember kids in my registration class talking about being shall we say active in the park at the weekends in my first year at secondary school

and this was 23 years ago before they had access to smart phones and the entire internet and pornhub to “teach” them

it doesn’t bear thinking about but it is happening, if you wait longer to educate them its too late

Not read the whole thread, apologies if I duplicate.

Having gone to a Roman Catholic high school, was given no sex education at all. Nor was I told anything by my mother - not even about menstruation. Thank god I've always been an avid reader - used to go to the library after school and read biology reference books.

I never understood why it was acceptable for my peers to disappear for a couple of months - until they'd had their abortions - and then rejoin school. The hypocrisy! Had they been educated, they'd have been equipped to know that you CAN get pregnant the 1st time, you Can get pregnant if you do it standing up. Shocking isn't it? But friends of mine - all intelligent A level students - believed this x

Interesting reading this thread. Yes some things should be taught at school, but I think they have to be careful what can be discussed taking into account cultural and religious differences.

I signed a form start of secondary giving permission for sex Ed, to date nothing has been discussed nearly at the end of year 8. He had a week of it in Yr6 which covered more than I thought it would at that age.

It also needs to happen at home, shouldn’t just be the school’s responsibility to educate the children on sex Ed and the wider topic and consequences

Agree with that last paragraph. Grew up in a very sexually repressed house and would've loved talking about it being normalized.

I agree it should happen at home but some have mothers like mine who wouldn't even answer me when I asked what a period was when I read it in a book or what a condom was when it was mentioned in a gardening programme as they made plant waterers out of them!

Yep my mam and dad believed they couldn't get pregnant the first time. So my mam ended up getting married at 17 and I arrived not long after. And she's not stupid she has A levels. It was a failure of both the education system and my grandparents in my opinion.

"What did your sexual education classes miss that you would seem as essential information and how would you change them? "

Sex Ed when I was in school was a brief part of the Biology syllabus, strictly the very basics of reproduction.

Modern education around consent, relationships , contraception etc. is much better but still far from the focus it needs to have

"I actually didn't have any in my school at all.

"

Same experience here except no mention of contraceptives exept in RE but I did go to a Catholic school.

Newry Down

Having attended Irish Christian Brothers schools that only had male pupils left me totally unprepared for the sexual aspect of life; some teachers, pupils and their parents were sexually abusive.

It was a dysfunctional culture, mainly covert, that has been well documented in multiple Government funded reports.

The Christian Brothers schools I attended were in Northern Ireland, but the dysfunctional culture has been replicated worldwide.

Essentially there was no sex education; the Catholic Church abhors sex as being dirty, guilt ridden, etc.

Please note that Jesus was born of a virgin called Mary, who was not impregnated; this warped notion is at the very core of Catholicism.

I came from a similar home and I didn’t even know what a period was when it arrived, thank god for matron.

For that reason I always said I’d be open. Nothing is taboo with my lad, a question gets asked and it will get an answer appropriate for his age. If I don’t know the answer he’ll get “I’ll get back to you on that one as don’t have first hand knowledge” or “when you are older we’ll come back to that” then it’s asking a friend who does. He is aware of a lot of things and to be honest probably more than I was in my early 20s

It is definitely a generation thing, my folks know my lad and I talk quite openly about everything, which they say is great and they know they didn’t as it just wasn’t done then.

"I'm wondering what some feel that they would have got from sex ed that they didn't get from experience of sexual awakening.

loads

like folk have said above more information about our own bodies - that vaginas don’t all look the same, what bv and thrush are , how your discharge can change throughout your cycle, that there are more options for sanitary protection than a half inch thick pad , what contraceptions options are available and how they work

stds, how common they are, how condoms are not 100% effective , how they should be properly used, what different types of condoms are available and why you might want to try different options, what lube is and why people might choose to use it

relationships, consent, setting healthy boundaries, red flags and what constitutes abuse, what options for support you have if you are assaulted

how sex is not just for reproduction, its also for pleasure, male and female, how not all sex needs to result in an orgasm and if it takes you time to learn that then its ok , that female orgasm can be more complicated than male and just p in v isn’t always gonna be enough to do it for most, the importance of foreplay, how exploring your own body and masturbation is natural and not shameful , how experimenting with your sexuality is also natural and not shameful

took me a long long long time to learn most of that - it certainly wasn’t all apparent during my sexual awakening and most of it came from google

Just basic anatomy would have been a start at my school, then maybe the lad who decided to slap his dick on my desk wouldn’t have got slapped with a ruler as I thought it was some escaped rodent

It was very poor. I mean, my parents had 6 bloody kids yet couldn't talk about sex. It was completely taboo. My older sister left home at 16 and went to London, so I couldn't even ask her. Thank god I didn't start my periods til I was 13 & had read up on it, otherwise I'd have been like Carrie in the film - thinking I was dying

"I'd cut all the religion and shaming girls and women (Eve tempted Adam therefore girls lead men to stray, etc).

And I'd actually have some sex education.

That was actually a thing?!

That was my sex education

Sounds vaguely familiar, along with school assemblies where we had to kneel to check our skirts were long enough. As not to distract the boys

Yup. All the hoops we had to go through. For the boys. "

I dont think the boys would gave minded

I used to play hockey and thought the girls hockey skirts were fine

i think there is alot of that stuff you shouldn’t have to just muddle through finding out , and lets face it the internet is not always a reliable source and teenagers are “learning” from porn

its not about starting as an expert, its about having facts to keep you safe, healthy, and knowledgeable enough not to spend half your life ashamed of your own body or desires til you just happen to find out it could be otherwise
