Some are. Poorly lit, blacked out windows.

But most are not. They are well designed and well lit. Of you want a consistent female customer base you need your shop to be sleaze free. There is less stigma from sex these days which also helps

so would you say if it was just a guy there would that make the shop look sleazy

"so would you say if it was just a guy there would that make the shop look sleazy"
nope. In a well laid out shop with displays that are lower there is no reason for the shop to be sleazy.

But the guy might be sleazy. That's different

Its a bit of a interesting situation really because sometimes the blacked out windows and somewhat poor lighting are actually part of the ambiance and what a lot of customers are still looking for when they go into a sex shop

For every customer you gain in one direction you probably lose one in the other..

Harmony have set the trend, they look more customer friendly to wide array.

Great for first time sex toy buyers, you can see what you're buying.

They seem more couple friendly.

Still, you wouldn't want to take the kids in on a Saturday shop.

Great if you don't like buying on line.

probably correct.

I think the age of internet porn really hurt that vibe though.

Sex shops went from selling lots of porn mags/videos and some toys to selling mostly toys.

And women are buying more toys these days (probably mostly on line tho) so your point stands

Some are actually doing better recently as in recent years there were probably too many and not enough slices of the pie too share around..

Now quite a few are gone things are beginning to look a bit healthier in general for a lot for those remaining

I think things will level out now and most that are going are probably gone barring licensing policy changes with local councils and any other moral crusades

Depends on the area i guess .

I know i wouldn't like to be new to the area and deal with all the shit that can go with it and that's even if your in town or city that doesn't have a zero cap on sex shops

Reply privatelyReply in forumReply +quote

By (user no longer on site)

Again it depends where of course..

Obviously you have to gauge local opposition to your licence application and other things such as other residents like people living above or nearby

It takes a lot of research before I'd even consider going for it in a new area

It can go very very wrong..believe me

If your in need of people's perceptions I'd leave it alone.

Some people will always be in favour and plenty more won't be but of your gonna go for it you need to be single minded and do it because you'll probably get a fair amount of shit and they'll be plenty of hurdles to jump over

Sometimes running a sex shop you can feel incredibly hard done by

First thing you need to know is does croydon have a cap on their policy stating how many are permissible??

And how many are their already?

Anne summers don't count not being licensed Sex shops

There is a great one near us,on the high street.

Great lighting, very clean and loads of stuff to choose from.

Not one bit sleazy.

There was one on the north circular that was like the old porn shops. Racks of magazines and cheap plastic objects. The clientele, men getting wank fodder.

But things have moved on these days. Theres more investment in tech, products, staff, the ambience. Its sold as a lifestyle and enhancement for folk with busy sex lives.

I would need a lot of research and investment to be an independent and successful enterprise.

What makes a sex shop sleazy? Could it be it's clientele? I haven't been in one for many years but I suspect the days of the old men in flasher macs are long gone. More couples and uninhibited females would be my guess.

I think in recent years its become more acceptable to go into sex shops. Its become more open and accepted to talk about sex and/or use sex shops/lingerie and toys.

Some can be. Lots aren't now though they can sell some tacky stuff. I've been into a few that are super fancy! Mostly lingerie boutiques in London that also have a sex toy section or there was an alternative clothing store in Camden that had a sex toy section if you went downstairs and that was pretty cool with coloured perspex shelving and neon lighting.

"are they mainly designed for men or women do you think i been in ann one and felt fine is a sex shop like that or more raunchier"

I’ve been in four and they were all extremely different.

One was Ann Summers - that’s not sleazy, that’s like a department store that happens to sell sex toys.

A private shop in Cardiff that had blacked out windows and lights so bright you could see it from Space, but it was like Blockbusters inside with a display of dildos.

A shop in Cardiff that was like a version of Ann Summers but had a more gothic (dark decor) feel. Lingerie in front, sex toys at the back.

And a Private Sex Shop near me. Which again was very bright and a bit like Blockbusters with added dildos dotted around.

All of the shops but one were empty when I went in. The one other customer was a young fella looking for a surprise for his gal.

None were sleazy. The staff were not sleazy.

They can seem sleazy from the outside and by reputation, but inside they are certainly not, most are now modern well lit and designed to attract customers.

The old type ‘private’ shops as they are called always looked sleazy from the outside and often in quite run down areas ... though confess I haven’t been in one for many years.

There is however a ‘sex supermarket’ chain called Pulse and Cocktails that I have visited a few times.. they are very bright, lots of different stock to peruse .... just like a supermarket, it’s a great place and you get men and women shopping in them ... so not sleazy at all.

I think they are northern based, but have seen roadside branches that have opened up in what used to be Little Chef outlets.

R xx
