I think it depends if you're friends or not. If you are, and you ask and she says no, it might spoil the dynamic you already have. So I guess you have to weigh up if it's worth the risk.

Over the years many a good friendship has been lost this way.

In all honesty? I'd keep schtum. If I genuinely, in a not self deprecating way, had no chance with this person then I wouldn't want to lose the friendship/alter the dynamic. That's more important to me than potentially risking something which I'm pretty certain won't end well.

That being said, part of me thinks that maybe being friends with someone and having feelings for them (and keeping quiet/not being 100% honest) might make someone think I only wanted to be friends to bed them? I can't articulate that well.
