Dead format

remember when you had a video library bigger than your book library? then DVDs came on the scene, and your VHS collection got replaced with a more compact collection, but with the age of streaming has your purchase of DVDs been effected? do you prefer to stream instead of purchase, or do you like that tangible feel? I got rid of over 300 movies on VHS, straight to the tip, i left it too late cause even charity shops won’t accept them, my DVD library is quite vast now, I don’t buy as often anymore, just special films i’d like a hard copy of, Bohemian Rhapsody was my last purchase.

Are you a collector or do you prefer to stream to stop the clutter?

I used to love collecting DVDs. I was a total sucker for steel covers/special edition ones. When Blu Ray came along I had a ps3 but I only bought movies that I knew where absolute visual spectacles.

I haven't bought a hard copy of anything in a long time partially because I feel that instead of paying say a tenner a month for one film, I can pay a tenner a month to streaming sites and get films plus box sets.

The one thing however I love about DVD/Blu Ray is the special features. Director commentaries, deleted scenes, storyboards and cast interviews. You learn so much more about the film and little details that you would have missed compared to just watching it on Netflix or whatever

I only collect the ones that have an impact on me now.

Got rid of the rest.

Internet makes you think that don't really to keep any nowadays. But you actually do ! I am looking for watching 'the pretender' again but can't find it anywhere !

I did a transatlantic move so had to ditch 90% of my books. Now i just have a handful of physical books and the rest are all digital. Same with my music. We do have quite a few physical dvds but we just keep them in a dvd binder.

Our English house is about a third of the size of our American house so we have had to learn to have less stuff.

I don't collect any. Used to have a VHS collection, then a DVD one then none. Just streaming now - watch once and forget.

Got to the stage where I was just collecting for the sake of collecting and now so much media is being produced that it has lost it's value.

i have no hard copies anymore, all streaming for me, used to have hundreds of tapes, then dvds, no all gone, the world moves on

I’ve got a fairly large CD and record collection along with a full bookshelf. I’m not a fan of digital music/books so my collections will continue to grow

Never got rid of any CDs or DVD's (music, film or software) because once you own them you do so for good. The internet is great for unburdening people of stuff then charging them ever increasing amoounts for the pleasure of accessing it.

Don't know if bothers you but this bothers me.

Have you ever been collecting a series and then the publishers change the cover look? I had a Stephen King lineup all the same and then boom! One looks different on the shelf

Yes. Totally interrupted the flow of the collection. King and koontz are both buggers for doing that. Those two were the backbones of my collection too

I've kept all my DVDs because I kicked myself when I got rid of all my vinyls when CDs came out. I was so frustrated when record players came back into vogue, I had so many really cool albums.

Lesson learned!

some of the country vinyl i have came with song notes, music sheets for all the instruments the bands used so you could play the songs yourself.

things were different back then for sure

I still like the physical media but rarely buy these days.

I do stream stuff but not for a ridiculous price such as Wonder Woman 1984 which was £15.99 on Amazon (now down to £4.99).

I tend to binge watch on a service such as Netflix then cancel the subscription once i have seen everything i want to watch, give it a few months and resubscribe if there is new stuff i wish to see.

I've probably seen more dead formats than most on here.

I was thinking back to 16mm films from various libraries but then realised it went further back than that. When we were kids, my father rented 9.5mm silent films from the Pathé library. Mostly Charlie Chaplin and Laurel and Hardy. When the library closed we bought a few films. I remember one we played many times, A to Z at the London Zoo. X was the Xenopus frog.

Fast forward to present day and I have a handful of DVDs including freebies I've never played.

Porny DVDs get passed down the chain after I've put my favourite files on hard drives.

Never had Blue Ray etc and never streamed anything, other than You tube, very sparingly. Biggest monitor here 27" in bedroom. otherwise mainly 15" laptops. I wouldn't contemplate watching stuff on a phone screen, other than stills or short You tube when no other choice.

I honestly don't understand where people find the time to sit and watch full length films. Presumably in someone else's time!

I haven't had a TV for ages, not since it went digital. 625 line analogue - there's another dead format for the list. Oh, and at work, in education (my paid hobby), I went through all the reel to reel video formats from 2" 525 line monochrome via 1" and 1/2" 625 mono various American and Japanese standards and then of course all the following cassette and disc variants which followed.

All the hardware binned now or gone to collectors who can't say no to it. Fortunately none forms part of my present clutter.

You may class them as dead but they will come around again. I never got rid of any of my records or tapes and yet, here were are again, back in fashion. I don't think video tapes will ever make it back except for the collectors but dvd might in the future.

Still got a couple of CRTs and several video recorders plus cassette players, minidisc etc

I've got HD-DVD player with about 50 films too but I think I'll have to wait about until after I'm dead for it to be with anything!

Don't kick yourself too hard. The modern record players that have been revived by market opportunists are junk by comparison to good decks from the HiFi era. Records get scratched. The sleeves were nice to look at though.

I'm happy to put up with maybe lower audio spec in return for the convenience of MP3 players or laptops into headphones. When does anyone sit in front of giant speaker cabinets any more? Mine are used as convenient flat surfaces while still being connected to a late 1990s computer sound card via a 1980s amplifier!

People are more and more selfish nowadays and inflicting your musical taste on others via speakers tends not to be appreciated any more!

I still have Prince purple rain on vhs and vids of the family my mum still had a player and a tv to plug them into.... it’s one of them things I’ve been meaning to get transferred onto cd but never got round to it x

I still prefer the physical item than fresh air.

Had the video collection and loads of films on them.

Swapped many up to dvd format and avi format and got rid of them.

Nowadays have a good selection of dvd films to keep and watch when I want to do.

Dont pay to stream but Ive bought more films that way and imported them instead of uk prices.

The problem with not having a physical copy of a film is trying to find an old one online.

When you pay to stream a film you don't get it for life.
