I always thought it was double de-clutching where you knocked the gear stick into neutral then into the next gear and you let the clutch out each time....used on older cars and vans I think....Am I close and if so do I get a prize?????

double declutching had to be used on the 1st hgv i drove in the 70's..

think it was more to do with the box not being synchromesh..

My family business is our local Ford Franchise, set up by my Grandad in the early 70's, when I learnt to drive in 1984 I had whatever car was going spare in the garage, consequently before I passed my test I'd had from 1 ltr fiestas up to 3 ltr cortinas sometimes just for a couople of weeks to drive round in with whoever I could get to sit in with me.....my first car after I passed my test that I kept for a while was a converted fiesta van with a dodgy starter motor that would cut out regularly at junctions, so I carried a hammer to tap it which always made it start again......nowadays I'd need a degree in astrophysics to find the starter motor and would be asked hard questions if the rozzers noticed I carried a hammer round in my car as a matter of course

Simpler days eh?

It's to match the layshaft speed up or down depending on whether you're changing up or down gears. It's neccessary without synchromesh but useful even with synchromesh if the in-gear RPM is going to be much different (e.g. when skipping gears). Heel-toe is something different, and is used to match engine RPM to drivetrain RPM during downshifts under heavy braking usually, for the purpose of preventing excessive engine braking from unsticking the driven wheels and causing loss of traction.

And you only really need a clutch to engage 1st or reverse gear and to start rolling. I once drove a car back from Luton to Widnes without a clutch altogether. proper pain in the arse at traffic lights

Problem for me (a petrol head) is the op has asked a a question that seems to try and make women drivers look a little silly when there is really no relevance to driving a car over 60 yrs old ....
