I’ve just .........Imperial or metric what do you work in.

My nan’s spare room.

I’ve just put the metric side of a rule against my old chap.

It just didn’t seem right.

The only time I think I use metric is when out running I measure my runs in kilometres and pace in minutes per km and when I’m cooking I use metric measurements.

What about you fellas and fellatinas.

The Facility

My first job was in a mechanical and electrical engineering consultants office so I learned to do everything there in millimetres.

Generally, I use millimetres, centimetres, inches, feet, metres and miles though.

I use imperial or metric for cooking depending on what the recipe book says

I do like to mix it up but I never get confused.

I like whatever scale has the right sort of numbers around where I am. 6ft, 13st... As much as I'd rather it was 12st 6lb, those are good numbers for what we're measuring there. 82kg... ehh it's too big a number, harder to get hold of. as is 50 farenheit, when 10 celcius is more tangible.

Mix up but unless I can have an actual visual representation of it I don't know what it represents if someone just says 'That's about 5 centimetres'.

Well it's sort of not. a foot being 12 inches means it can be immediately divided into 2, 3, 4 and 6... Base 12 is pretty awesome. Maths would be so much easier if we used the Duodecimal system... 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, A, B, 10, 11, 12...

Isn't Bar an Imperial measure too? I thought the SI for pressure was kilo-Pascals

Mosh mash of both, but imperial is my go too.

I then have to convert it in my head to metric so younger people working with me know what I’m on about.

Conversely I will be given information in metric and have to put it back in old money so I can picture it.

For example some one refers to a 20 acre field I can see that block of land in my head, but if they said 8 hectares I’d be lost until I put it back in acres.

They’re exactly the same by the way.

I'm absolutely the opposite

An inch is about 2.5cm, a yard is about a metre, and if you start talking about stone I'll go looking for a geologist

Both.

When working on building sites years ago you had to use both. Timber and some bricks tend to come in imperial sizes and occasionally metric too. But I prefer metric for the accuracy, imperial is good for speed.

When I have used the scales to weigh myself last year I used imperial for that too.

Metric - being able to divide and multiply by 10 is so much easier for distance, weight and cubic capacity.

When at sea, its similar to imperial - nautical miles are based on one minute of latitude and 60 of those in a degree.

1.4 inches works for me, also 1 metre and 3/8ths of an inch , one apprentice l worked with held his tape and thumb at the required measure and walked through the site like that to mark the work
