An environmentalist on Breakfast TV today said that humans should not keep dogs as pets because they needlessly expel methane which contributes global warming..

Cattle do the same but at least we eat them..

This is a tricky one. I mean, at least if I had a cow it would mow my lawn and I'd hopefully get some milk. Taking it for a walk down my street is going to be a challenge though as the footpath is not exactly generous. Then, there's the matter of picking the poop up. Nobody takes a shovel and a bin liner out when they walk their pet Pomeranian.

Global warming and climate change is natural it always was and is going to happen, but it is greatly accelerated by human creation and interventions.

Don’t see much point in a pet myself Tom, I’ve got wild animals all around. But I think they offer comfort to the lonely and they probably aren’t as bad as SUVs being driven down the high street to take little felicity the 800m to school over the “rough terrain” of a tarmac road.

Apparently in total 'all' pets contribute 64 million tonnes of CO2 per year. That is the equivalent of 13 million cars.

Interestingly using a phone and sending emails has quite a large impact too.

They have calculated that a single buisness user will likely generate 135Kg of CO2 on one yet 'just' by sending, receiving and reading emails. That's the equivalent driving 200 miles.

That suprised me, but doesn't seem to bad but then it turns out that all the spam emails sent around the world contribute 20 million tonnes of CO2 per year

So let's keep the dogs, as they have mental benefits to many people and kill the spam as that does nobody any good.

It is not the methane an individual dog produces, it is their diet that is the problem. An average dog eats about 5 times more meat than a human and it is the production of this meat that causes problems. Pets eat about a fifth of the meat and fish produced. An average sized dog causes about 770 kg of CO2e per year.

An excellent proposal for a scientific experiment! May I suggest a slight tweak to the protocol? Include a shark, a crocodile, a rat, a dog and an elephant in the experiment. Stopper up their gas pipes too, put the experimental subjects all in a shared space and see who survives the night
