That rain smell

Kettering

Just had a very light rain shower here, the first rain in weeks. I've just popped outside and noticed that smell you only get during the first rain after a long dry spell. You never get it if it has rained previously that day or that week. What is it? Are there any scientists that can explain this ??

There is an ancient Indian technique of capturing the smell of petrichor, they distill baked earth harvested before the monsoon rains into sandalwood oil. Its called 'mitti attar' its quite pricy and often adulterated or fake these days but if you can find a real one it's well worth the price. I have some and it's beautiful, lasts for hours and hours on the skin giving you gebtke wafts of petrichor all day
