Tonight I learned about the village of Imber near Salisbury and how the MOD pretty much evicted everyone in the late 40's and they are still not allowed back home. Then I learned about the Bleaklow Bomber, which was a B29 USAF Superfortress aircraft that crashed near Glossop in 1948 and the wreckage is STILL THERE. Google it...fascinating stuff. | |||

I dont live far from there, the ground around the crash site still throws up the odd bit of the aircraft, I believe it crashed because of fog | |||

Based on the flight time, the crew believed it had passed the hills and began to descend. At about 11:00 the aircraft hit the ground at 610m above sea level, 300m north east of the summit of Higher Shelf Stones and it was engulfed in flames. Basically, they thought they were higher than they actually were. I don't know if that is pilot error or if their instruments were faulty or just not that advanced for low cloud. | |||
