Hi

Anyone able to recomend how to start with upcycling a pine bookcase? Im thinking of painting and the decoupage vintage book pages on the shelves. Sand first? Wash with soap water? Just paint with primer or chalk straight off? How does one finish - wax? Varnish?!

Always prepare the surface by giving it a light sanding. I usually key the surface then paint.

Oh and after you've sanded brush the dust off, wipe down with a damp cloth and follow with a dry one.

Depends on what you want to do. If it's varnished and you want to paint it then you either have to sand it off completely then paint or

Wash with TSP,Sand lightly, clean, use a primer for your specific paint type, sand lightly then paint twice.

If you put the time in thw results qill be really good

It's just another way of saying lightly same it . I upcycled a 1940s dressing table recently that had old varnish etc on it, I used an electric sander on that but an old sewing box I did only needed a light rub over with a scotchpad.

If you're unsure try a small area first.
