That is very true.

I used to go out of my wife to try make myself understood. Often this was taken as me trying to justify whatever wrong people assumed I meant. I do have a long winded way of saying things and often use too many words. As I approach my 30s I realise for many people this effort is a waste of time.

Unless I’m hurting someone or doing something bad, I really don't have time or energy to worry about how people receive me.

It's called projection in psychology.

The key for the person receiving this is to understand that they are not the sum of other's opinions. Self reflection and self knowledge give you a clear picture of your own identity and you choose whether to take on board other's opinions of you.
