Fitness Challenges for April

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

Hi everyone

In March I posted this thread and it generated fantastic input from so many people wanting to share their fitness goals, activities or challenges, so I thought I'd post again for April.

In March myself and my boyfriend attempted to run 100 miles in 48 hrs, we achieved 82 miles in 41 hrs but a foot injury for me meant we called a stop to the challenge. I am still recovering and still can't walk any distance, I just need to keep resting it...which is driving me crazy as I love to be active.

So for me I need to identify alternative exercises to help my upper body and avoid putting stress on my foot, I also need to regain flexibility in my legs and stretch my muscles without hurting my foot. Ideas on a postcard would be ever so appreciated.

What activities are you doing this month? Are you in training for a personal goal? Are you eager for gyms to reopen or have you adjusted to your new normal workout routine? Or maybe you will maintain a blend of the gym and outdoors.

I would love to know how you are getting along

Her x

Take it easy Op, you need to do low impact cross training, I don’t know if swimming is out of the question.

I’m running, just training to beat my 5k PB, think later I’d like to do a my first half marathon.

Used to run, stopped because of bad knees. Did CrossFit, stopped because if bad knees. Did powerlifting, yep, bad knees.

But definitely will be back in the gym on the 12th like a rat up a drainpipe.

My target is really just to keep plodding on, as best I can...

Running in a pool might help there OP. It feels really odd but there is far less stress and you are still moving.

April for me is about increasing the running distance gradually and trying to work to more of a program I.e. hill repeats, tempo work and long run

When the indoor pools open I will be back into training to build up to 30 laps a day again, I've deffered my tattoos till winter so I can concentrate on regaining my core stamina and fitness without having a break

Thanks. I may look into swimming actually, that's a good idea.

A first half is a great achievement, I am hoping to be on track to enter my first marathon event in October.

I'm a crossfit addict. I run, do strength and a crossfit workout everyday. I also do my mobility and accessories. I've rented and bought alot of equipment. I miss my gym (box) so bloody much. At the moment we've not been given a date for reopening. Our coaches though have worked so hard with us throughout lockdown. Today is my running day (sorry op) threshold intervals. Wish me luck

Wishing you a speedy recovery op.

Hill repeats and tempo runs are evil but so beneficial towards your long run goals. I approach them with dread, I endure them with hatred and I am relieved when they are over but I like the benefits

Good luck with it

Awww I'm sorry to hear about your foot but it's good that you're giving it proper rest and not rushing back. You should still be very proud of your efforts though

I've had a slightly different foot injury so not been working out for a few weeks but I plan to head back to the gym to continue weight training and also trying to get some cricket training in for the season ahead.

It would mean 4 days at the gym, 1 day of cricket training and then the whole Saturday or Sunday playing cricket. Might be tough, but looking forward to getting out and playing sport again

Continue with recovery from injury.

Things moving in the right direction, just taking it slowly and upping the weights very slowly. Still very frustrating as weights are stupid light.

Weight is also falling off me as I cant push, just about a stone gone in 3 and a bit months, will need to regain all that muscle before next year.

Looking to get back to competition in 2022.

You need to take a supplement created by Dave Palumbo - was a top Pro bodybuilder in the USA and is now one of the top trainers and nutritionists, his supplement can regrow cartilage.

I came up with a similar formula 10 yrs ago to treat severe arthritis of the knee, and along with MRI scans to prove it has worked I have passed a boxing fitness test and can walk and climb mountains, squat over 300lbs - all without pain.

I could run but the disadvantages outweigh the benefits when it comes to jogging and running.

You though are doing so well with your garden project which is a fantastic all over workout and will not only benefit your garden but you too. I know how much you love to dance, so I hope your classes restart soon

Did a knee x-ray last year and my cartilage is fine. No bone chips or tears that they could see. They think it's basically inflammation of the bone itself. Just need to not squat three times a week like I used to, and do other leg work in between. It's thirty years of baseball, running, lifting, jumping, and crappy genetics.

I was an Ultrarunner doing 100km events. I foolishly ran my last one with plantar fasciitis. The net result was a very badly damaged foot which took 2 years to recover. I was stopped from doing any exercise for 9 months and then was only allowed swimming and cycling. This worked and I started back towards marathon distance. I had 3 planned for 2020, but they all got put off. I am doing 6 miles s a day at the moment and sprint triathlon, 1.5km run, 24km bike, and 5km run at the weekends. The swimming and cycling I can recommend. Mind you need to cycle twice the distance you used to run to get the same result!

Hope you make a full recovery xx I hurt my right metatarsal last year and soent most of the first lockdown being unable to exercise.

I still running, no improvement on times whatsoever... still doing HIIT training and while I see little or no difference on my lower body, I see a lot of change in my arms and shoulders which I am happy about! Sorry to hear about your foot but also well done on your challenge still an awesome effort.

I’ll carry on running in April my Achilles has been a bit problematic so only doing 10-13km runs at the mo, if it hurried up and gets better I’ll do a distance challenge in a few months.

I completely understand you, and hope you find the spark to get outdoors soon.

If it helps I am going to try a tiny walk today of less than a mile, literally just around the block. But that will be so good for me.

I won't put my running trainers on as they hurt the bone in my foot but my converse trainers are just canvass and are more comfortable for my natural foot position.

I hope I motivate you to head out for a stroll during this month,

Her x"

.. I was wondering how you got on in your challenge. Shame you did complete your target but still it's incredible what you did. Really some achievement to do that. Mind that leg you don't want long term damage. I set target to run marathon distance and I did that a few weeks ago. Dont know what do during summer... Going to run the width of Dublin from coast inland... There is a a canal on south side that goes the whole length so think that's challenge. Will keep eye out for your next adventure!! Good luck!!

Hey well done on your marathon your next challenge sounds great too.

Our next challenge is to run and hike the ascent of Everest over a month. It was due to begin this month but its postponed until my foot recovers.

I'm doing 50 miles for prostate cancer. I'm walking it as I got pneumonia of the lungs from covid in January. Now long covid. In 5 days I've covered 20. That's with a day off. Having a lazy one today. I might get a mile or pushing it 2 in a bit

That 1million steps in a month looks a killer. Ok I guess if you can run. Would take up every day for me come rain, sun, wind or bloody snow

Ty and yes I will. I sometimes walk more and can reach 17000 on some days, anything above 10000 steps is a bonus

You are doing incredibly well, don't forget you are still recovering.

I have a friend on here with long covid and he is finding it very difficult and frustrating to do any exercise, and it wipes him out after. So the effort and achievement to date is fantastic and should be celebrated... very well done

I will look forward to hearing how you get on over the weeks.

"My goals for April include: get back to the pole studio, gym and swimming pool; keep up my 10k a day steps, lose some fat ready for photoshoots starting in May.

Pole dancing/training must be fantastic for core strength. You have a great blend of activities, I need to consider this too.

Look forward to seeing your photos from the shoot, I hope its a fun experience too.

Pole dancing is great for everything, I recommend it to everyone!

Pics will be on here for sure. The first shoot is a lingerie one next month, after that I have some pole ones.

I tried a Radix bath last night after hill climbing yesterday. It probably helped, I guess I could have been in worse pain today if I hadn't done it!

Well done to you

Having hot muscle relaxing baths will help but also give your legs time to recover, the muscles need to repair and strengthen. Even if you don't want to have a rest day then simply slow your pace.

Well done to you on your weight loss too, its awesome.

Sorry to hear about your foot injury, but bloody well done on what you did achieve.

A little while back, I managed to do violence to my hamstring where it inserts to the pelvis. So while I was waiting for the physio's handy work to take effect, I swapped the running for home HIIT. Did a load of shadow boxing and burpees (amongst other things) according to a HIIT time scheme.

Solution - get a wheelchair and exercise in that!!

In seriousness, use resistance bands when seated, do seated yoga/Pilates or floor yoga/Pilates if you can. Have a look at upper body exercise for wheelchair users and you'll get some ideas for seated activity. There's a lady called Ella Beaumont who does Ella's Wheelchair Workouts on YouTube It can be done by anyone seated, the wheelchair isn't a pre requisite.

Gosh how frustrating, but still an amazing achievement!

I am waiting impatiently for the gym to ropen

I started walking in March to get myself moving and start preparing my body for training again and try to get my head i to an exercise mindset

If I can squeeze the time into my day, I'd like to walk to/from the gym

... But that might have to be a weekend activity

Best wishes for a speedy recovery x

In all honesty, I was scared to start running again. My injury was so bad I couldn't walk into town- 600m- without sitting down on a wall. When I eventually decided to run I did parkrun and didn't care about the time. I was eventually rumbled by a friend as having " come in from the cold" to run again.

Lots of my bother was in my head, once I started to crack that it got easier.

I am running a trail half marathon in June.

I cannot recommend cycling and swimming enough. Now the worst f the winter has gone I do a 6 mile run, 6 mile walk, 15 mile cycle, once per day- not the same day!!!

Have a look at knees over toes guy on Instagram for stuff to help your knee issues.

I do a lot of heavy lifting for strongman events and have noticed a difference doing some of the exercises he shows.
