Too much technology?

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

The Mars Rover tweeted it's landing.

Bank traders in America almost going bust because the technology screwed the data.

People not being paid or knowing how much was in their accounts here because of a software update.

Too much reliance and expectations of new technology?

Our dependence on technology could be our downfall.

"Our dependence on technology could be our downfall."

So much is reliant on bits of wire or fibre optics that connect to things that whirr and ping.

Pencil, paper and common sense doesn't run out of batteries.

Who could go a few hours without having to use their mobile phone or pc though?

I couldn't.

I prefer books and magazines rather than kindle type stuff.

It's just yin and yang, I suppose.

Ask yourself this, did computers have any part in designing the bouncing bomb or the planes that carried them?

Did computers design the first motorcars or bikes?

Who puts the computers together and make them work?

Who designed the computers?

I don't think we will be defunct just yet

"what will happen if a foreign power manages to shut down the web?"

It would probably affect them too. It's all so connected now.

The Mars Rover is on... Mars and it's tweeting! I don't know how it opened it's Twit account or how many followers it has but it made me wonder if it is the first off-world Twit account holder?

".. you cant send food down a fibre optic cable "

Yet.

If you see something on Star Trek it's only there because the army of physicists that work on the show have said that it isn't beyond the realm of physics. I can't wait for my Samsung Replicator to arrive in 2048, I just hope that the Tescos Hovervan isn't too busy that day and that it's automated driver is female.

Kingston

I am old enough to have used a slide rule - and trig tables

A computer is a tool to enable me to do my work with less drudge work

It is also good for letting me play on Fab

however for many years - even before computers they said any large city was only three meals away from anarchy

A govt can block access via hardwired cabling but it can't totally police mobile internet access broadcast via satellite.

If someone wanted to do some serious damage to the UK internet infrastructure for a period all they'd have to do is take out Telehouse in London.

I don't know how to explain without sounding like a massive nerd but basically the world wide web and the Internet are not the same thing. The web is a collection of documents saved on many computers and servers all over the globe, the Internet is a network of networks connecting your computer and these servers and computers. If you think of it like a giant net with each point where the strings cross as a computer, there are many many ways to get from any one point to another so a lot of strings would have to be cut before it becomes impossible to get from A to B.

Short of a massive electro magnetic pulse (EMP) frying every piece of electronic equipment on the planet, no, you really can't shut it down.
