The term ‘MILF’ - is it offensive?

Jump to newest

By (user no longer on site) OP

There is a bit of a debate playing out on Twitter about the term ‘MILF’ and how it is offensive, with some arguing it basically says “despite your body being ruined by having children” you’re “still fuckable”. In other words a negative perception to elicit percieved ‘sexual gratification’

I’ve only ever used the term to be something positive and a way to signal to a mother of children she is attractive and sexy.

Have I missed something ?

I missed that memo!! My sons friends used to call me one just to try and piss him off - I thought it was hilarious. Never once been offended by it, I'm a mother and if someone genuinely thought I was fuckable then I can't really be upset by that

I don't personally like it. To me it's putting worth on my reproductive capabilities. My friend whose not able to have children has been called a MILF just because of her age and appearance. And it distresses her when men do. So I think it's best not to presume if someone has had children or not.

I dislike it because it singles somebody out based on one criterium "ability to reproduce" which I find rude and unethical even if it does not apply to me.

"What are peoples views on GILF's then?"

Just as offensive to me - again it singles somebody out based on one criterium. I dislike being approached for being a mature" woman... it disregards the rest of me, my personality and everything that goes with that.

In a nutshell, I would like to be approached as a person... not a pussy, a Milf or anything else that represents a category.

Does that make sense?

Generalise people into a category and you will always upset some.

I am a milf and a bbw and a redhead and tall. I like some of those, so will subscribe happily!

Others make me feel bad, so I dont.

Yeah I thought this... was it not Stifler’s mom in American Pie that brought the hype, or maybe it was even before that? I guess I’ve always thought the meaning is a term for guys who thought their mates’ mums were hot, not necessarily just because they’ve had children

Not far

It’s a judgemental term at the end of the day designed to assign value to some women and not others, and isn’t generally intended for the recipient to receive it as a compliment. When I think of the first time I heard it in the film American Pie, it strikes me as being childish. But that’s just me.

Not all women's bodies are 'ruined' by having children. As long as I have heard the term, it has just reflected the age group, as in older than the person saying I fancy that Milf.

Yes, I think guys generally use it for and attractive lady that is older than them. Regardless if they have children or not.

It's not meant to be offensive, but people are always offended by things...

Different terms and words can have greatly varying meanings to different people. Always try to be respectful and non-offensive, but in saying that, sometimes the levels some people take in being offended has gotten ridiculously over the top especially on Twitter

Is it really a necessary term though? Why not a lady in their.....?

It's not a case of being offended for my friend. It's a reminder of the countless miscarriages she had and failed IVF attempts. And it brings up bad memories and feeling as if she's not a "proper woman" as she calls it. I've seen her tears and pain over the years, yes it's a throw away easy abbreviation but the word mother carries a lot of emotions to some.

I can see where you are coming from and these days, it does feel a bit like everything can be taken the wrong way.

In truth, most things can be misconstrued or interpreted as intentionally malicious.

I also think that with your attitude..."Always try to be respectful and non-offensive" you hit the nail on the head. Trying to be non-offensive suggests to me that you have self-awareness - you are therefore not likely to be offensive. Does that make sense?

I don't hear it used often in male company apart from a few years back when it first became a saying.. I only really see it on porn sites like 'amster.. I would never use it in open conversation with a female and I can understand why some girls might find it offensive.. it's a bit like calling your liver a slut . Some girls detest the use of it and a few really embrace the title in the right context for the right situation .

I don't like upsetting women so would not use it unless for some reason she liked it

Remember that it's a phrase from a movie. It was supposed to be shocking and used by teenagers.

Never in my life I have I ever looked at a woman and thought... shes a milf.

I had never actually put much thought into it but the comments above make sense. If it's a mom you would like to fuck, it implies there are more moms out there who you wouldnt fuck.

And knowing teenage boys thats never ever been the case. 99% of straight teenage boys would fantasise about any and every woman they thought would have sex with them.

vanilla is an incredibly expensive and tasty flavouring. We would be lucky to live in a vanilla world.

I would suggest a non seasoned world as the one to identify as a place to avoid.

And yes. Humour can be hard when you cant make fun of people for their sex, orientation, colour or religion. But it's not impossible. Just try harder

It definitely meant that when I was young and my kids were young and never used outside of that to be fair!

I have a few friends that don't have kids and the assumption that they've had children, just because of their age, really pisses them off. On that alone I think it's a disrespectful term in all reality

I thought it was originally a term used by young guys' mates to say they fancied their Mum and evolved into a broader meaning of a guy wanting to fuck a somewhat older woman. Similar to cougar? An age thing rather than if she has had a child, old enough to be his Mum.

If you want to be technical, in the wild, cougars prey on the smaller, the weak and the older, affording them a higher chance of catching their prey and a lower chance of expending vital energy which could otherwise be used for surviving.
