Horsham

Has anyone been up to the mach loop in Wales, taking photos of the low flying aircraft.

Is it hit and miss on seeing the planes, or is it quite regular that they use this area for training?

Looking to go up there later this year, just curious where is the best place to camp?

I went, found it quite tricky to find the place to park, and didn’t see any planes, I’d still do it again though.

Once I was driving alongside the valley and one came past us, it was fantastic.

The Mach Loop videos online are amazing; there must be some specialist websites or blogs that enthusiasts use in order not to make a wasted journey to this isolated location.

I have heard that successful viewing has recently become more sporadic; if I was to make the journey over from Ireland, I would want to combine it with a visit to a swingers club and also arrange some private meets in Wales.

I have been to Lakenheath and Mildenhall in the past as well as Leuchars, but Mach Loop displays are on another level of exhiletation altogether.

Love that place, was better when we still had the Tonka in service, more frequent than it is now.

Cad east and west give some of the best views in my opinion.

There is more than the website lists. We camp just off from the side of the loop right on the coast, quite a few flying over guessing heading to valley?

Also you don't get the height advantage but windermere lake has a hell of a lot more flying over than the loop does, more varied as well and you do get some things passing quite low to say the least

There's a website with the flying programme on it for dates and times. I imagine that the best spots will probably will be crowded with photographers though.

The family spent a week touring Wales when I was younger, we spent two days in the area. The low flying planes were amazing. No I have a half decent camera, I want to see what I can do.

Also, it’s weather dependent, so when we went it was slightly cloudy, I went in hope, but no luck.

I live on the loop. It's weather dependent low clouds and they won't fly low. The website normally will say when they plan to fly. You need to be up there all day from early till late, and even then you may not see any, go prepared with blanket, food, drink, some take tents for shelter as its windy up there but wow its it worth it when they do fly past. Makes me scream!

There's photographer's up there that have special radios so they know when they are coming. It's rather exciting.

Camp sites for tents aren't open yet though but there's 1 right below the best spot.

I have been camping in Wales before, so was looking to much later in the year. When it might be warmer lol.

I know the campsites are closed, trying to plan a trip at the moment.

Sure they plan to fly certain days and yes a scanner helps to know who's coming through.

I reckon you could get around 15 cars in there. Getting to the top by 9 is a good idea.

There are other places on the loop to stop but car parking more limited. Cad west /east are the best.

Yep, went many years ago. yep it can be good or you can sit up the hills all day and see nothing. Oh, and the RAF fast jets are still banned from the loop, still allowed in other parts of wales i think. USAF f15 still go through though...

Lat year I went walking at lake vyrnwy which is close by when two jets buzzed the lake which was pretty cool

I loved and hated the lakes, getting woken up by 2 low flying tornadoes. Not good when you are nursing a hang over.

Yes been to the mach loop several times.. Sat on a hill, the planes come in below you.. Then they roll, and look up to see you on the hill.. I actually squealed when a strike eagle pilot waved... Reminds me of the mid eighties and going to mallet blow exercises at Otterburn..
