"Got my car back this morning with a window at works and 4 shiny new brakes! Tool it for a little drive out only for it to start bloody overheating! not that far away from home but having to drive there in stages as it keeps beeping at me! Oddly, the mechanic just put the keys through the door and left without payment. Think he knows something?! " Sounds like hes had the same issue driving it back ... id expect a call later over payment and a diagnostic

Waiting for it to cool down before looking further.

Are you sure he was a mechanic ?

But really best not to drive.... Check wayervwhen cooler

"What is wrong with MX5's," Early ones are great (non-interference engines) but are now at an age where hoses perish and rear sill rot is a problem. The later models are less reliable.

"So.... Matey mechanic is coming back today as he diagnosed a problem with the rubber band that drives the water pump but my question is this..... Would this cause a water leak? I will ask him that later as well don't worry " If the water pump is driven off of the auxiliary belt (I don't know the 207cc engine well enough to know one way or the other) and it's slipping, then what will happen is that you'll have insufficient water flow around the engine to cool it, and as it over heats it'll also over pressurise the cooling circuit, leading it to push water out of the expansion tank cap, hence making it look like a leak.

"Most" water pumps are driven off of the timing belt nowdays, but it could still be an issue with the pump, some are known to have the impeller fall off, leading to the same situation as above.

"So got the bill for the brakes and window regulator (and exhaust shield repair that I didn't know needed doing!) No mention of overheating. Maybe he doesn't want to work on my car anymore lol " So this suggests that he didn't speak to you about the exhaust sheild before going ahead an repairing it. That is unauthorised work and you should dispute it. This is why I never trust garages - but then I am capable of doing my own maintenance and repair work.

"I've been without my car for nearly two weeks - still no diagnosis, which sounds expensive C" Oh no! It's been in the garage for 2 weeks? Fingers crossed its not too bad.

"I've been without my car for nearly two weeks - still no diagnosis, which sounds expensive C" Sounds more like a bad garage, if they haven't even diagnosed it in 2 weeks then how much effort do you think they're going to put in for the repair let alone how well they're going to diagnose the problem. Change your garage or find a way to charge them for the time they have kept your car for.

" No, but not really the point. Your cooling issue has probably been lurking for a while. Possible you may have been evaporating coolant over a perood of months and it just so happens that it's fallen below a level where it can adequately cool the engine in this weather and under certain druving conditions. Always worth keeping an eye on it regularly

It's not to do with evaporating coolant. It lost all of its water three times today as I drove it home from town. Its very similar to what it did before. The water holds in the tank when filling it up but as I drive its as if none goes to the engine. Then when I stop a lot of water pools out.

"What a nightmare! Is it a MX5? Peugeot 207cc lol Ahh, ok. This had happened to me few years ago when I had an MX5. They are notorious. It was low engine oil that caused it. The warning light didn't work so I kept driving it. " Ah so like all cars you need to keep eye on tyre pressure, oil levels, hydraulic fluids etc. I've had three MX5's and never had any real problems with them. Working from home means the battery's had a hammering this past year. So bought a new battery from Halfords and the boyfriend fitted it in less than half an hour! They are great little beauties! I love them so much my personal plate has MX5 and SUZ ...

"When you say you stop and water pours out you mean it off the tank? Maybe the thermostat is knackered and it's not letting the water through? Mr" The previous mechanic said it was because a belt on the pump want working to push the water round so the engine got hot. Then the pressure in the water tank pushed the water out of an escape valve?! Something like that anyway.
