A pet hate of mine is someone shortening my real name.

Do you prefer a shortened version of yours (if it can be) or do you prefer it whole?

Like some others posting on this thread, mine is a single syllable with no potential for shortening other than to the initial. I can tolerate, but don't encourage, that.

However, it can be incorrectly lengthened to a similar name which some wrongly assume to be my given name.

Also it can be lengthened into a diminutive form which I don't welcome, particularly with 'boy','babe','baby' or 'me lad' appended!

I rarely ever tell anyone my first name, because it caused me a lot of hassle as a child, within my family.

When anyone addresses me by my first name, it causes me inordinate stress and makes the hairs on my neck stand up.

I have considered changing it by deed poll, but cannot settle on an alternative.

I prefer it if I am addressed as 'you' or by an expletive.

I have a name which doesn't really benefit greatly from being shortened.

When I sign off emails in work I swap the last letter for another as people have created a similar name for me and I even refer to myself as it.

My boyfriend on the other hand creates ever expanding variations to my name.

Our friends use the male version of my name for me and its also the Spanish male version of my name.

I find it all fun and join in with the silliness

In a town full of colours

People always use my full name, I'm old fashioned like that

My close friends call me by a nickname not related to my first name

My full name is hardly ever used, I have ended up with three names

Dan for every day use.

Danny if someone is creeping or wants something.

And Daniel that is my full name just gets used if I'm being told off

"A pet hate of mine is someone shortening my real name.

Do you prefer a shortened version of yours (if it can be) or do you prefer it whole? "

Short version for me as only my crazy parents ever used the full with a H version.

Prefer my shortened name... Think it stems from my full name only being used when I was in trouble as a kid

I introduce myself by my full name. If someone shortens it I take it as a sign of friendship. I tend to shorten names on the same basis, but am respectful of their preferences

Lifes departure lounge NN9 Northamptonshire East not West MidlandsMidlands

The only person to use my full name is my sister, everyone else uses the short version with which I have no problem.

What does irritate me is that when written communications are used people will refer to me as Jeff and not Geoff.

Very similar for me, Terry or shortened to Tel or Tes and Terence on official documents. Even had Cpl T when in the Military.

I prefer my name shortened. Basically that's because my Mum only ever called me by my full name when I was in trouble, and that has stuck with me.

Plus it sounds friendlier.

Our daughter is 3 letters, my father in law shortened it to 2 letters the very first time he met her. I was NOT impressed. He hasn't done it since.

Both our first names can be shortened.. We call each other by our full names so expect others to as well.

I don't like it at all. It seems to be a regional thing. At home growing up nobody shortened it. Now at work there are a few who constantly shorten it the worst is our CEO who himself has his full name and its not shortened so why the feck does he think it's acceptable to shorten everyone else's?
