For me it's the pre crying stage when your eyes start to prickle, Trying to waft air over them to stop them prickling.

Interesting assumption. I don't think it's that though. I'm trying to think why would I do it at all.. maybe I have make up on and all you are witnessing is me trying to fight my hand to stop it from wiping it off. Inner battle.

Being that emotional can result in a rush of blood to the face, the rush of blood, feels a bit like a hot flush, so not only are you trying to not cry but your temperature has shot up, sometimes the hand fan thing is to cool the face. Could be wrong but thats my take on it.
