"Who here has quit? Did anyone use Champix? I'm. Keen to hear about that in particular. I've heard of people vomiting at just the smell of it after using that and it's putting me off as I hate being sick. So good stories will help but the good the bad and ugly needed. How much weight did you gain after quitting and did you feel better for it and notice the effects? " My mother us to smoke 50 a day. Did the whole course of champix and didn't smoke another cig ever again. But my daughters mother went on chamapix and didn't finish the course so started smoking a couple months after. So make sure you finish the course of tablets.

"I quit about 20 years ago ..... maybe a bit more i've lost count now.... nearer 30. I can tell you how. It's no great story and prob not a fantastic fix....." Go for it. I stopped for 3 months at one point. My ex chased me his car across town trying to ram my car off the road and I ended up having a panic attack and bought cigarettes to try and calm myself down. After that I lost the will as I felt like something would happen each time. Guess my mindset wasn't strong enough at the time.

"I quit in 2018 after over 20 years smoking , cant advise you on medical methods as I just stopped altogether and I vape now . Good luck you can do it xx" I tried vape but I coughed each time and got annoyed with it. Then realised its quite complicated to get the right vape, strength, flow etc and that seemed like a headache along with a fair amount of money to get it right.

"I quit 4yrs ago went cold turkey...first two weeks were horrendous but I’ve never looked back since x" That's good. Your willpower must have been brilliant. I'd like to try that but I'm scared I'll be a bitch or a nightmare to others in my house.

"I used them. I only lasted a week on them constantly felt sick off them. I didnt actually vomit just felt unwell abd went off my food ect. I ended up quitting by moving over to the vapour pens then quit for good. " I quite liked that idea myself. Maybe I should try again with a vape and keep reducing the nicotine each time.

"Okay. You said 'Go for it' so I will. There'll be a bit of background so sos about that but it's relevant. I'll try to keep it short. Started smoking just before my 16th birthday. Smoked for approx 30 years and had often tried to stop. Husband lost his job and debts began to mount. I sat down and did a lot of financial workings out about how to keep the house, the kids schooling, eat cheaply , no car etc etc etc yada yada like you do. I said........ No cigs. No cigs pays the mortgage. We both smoked. There's the motivation. It was about helping my husband and keeping a roof. Things had to be prioritised. I'd tried before but this time the stakes were higher...... So ...... there's your background. I'm gonna make a coffee n come back in a mo....... with the 'how' " The money side... I want to save what I spend. I don't by boxes anymore as they are horrendously priced so I've kept cost down in a way if that makes sense. Which doesn't help. Its the lungs I want to save more.

"Will power helped me stop. I was early 20s and a friend quit with me at the same time. He didn’t last the week, and as I had gone 4 days, that’s all I needed, the fact I could do it was proof I could kick the habit for good. I never looked back and wished I was smoking again , and I never met anyone else saying they do either. ![]() ![]() ![]()

"Vaping = Dummy" Absolutely it is - but it's a better and cheaper dummy than the little white sticks and has the benefit of keeping me away from them. Not as good as the "distraction" techniques you mentioned mind

I do remember reservations about the safety of vaping tho sometime back but don't know what the final analysis was... I still don't like people vaping in restaurants etc...... even though I agree that it's not smoking. I'm not sure what my dummy is ..... I don't drink, don't smoke...... I must have one though.

" Last time I spoke about vaping with my GP (a couple of years ago) he said there had been no verified indication that it caused harm in itself - the biggest problem is it's not hugely regulated in terms of the quality of the liquid etc so there are some cheap and cheerful liquids that could be problematic. Either way message from the Doc was to carry on if it kept me off the fans. Totally with you on vaping indoors though and wouldn't feel right these days to inflict my clouds of vape on a crowded room any more than it would clouds of smoke.

"Pre Pre how : We went to a therapist. We paid good bucks. He asked Q's and we gave A's and he meditated with us and gave us a tape of us ( we did it individually ) to listen to . A stop smoking tape. ( it as on a cassette , that gives you the time scale ) Anyway ..... I smoked while listening to mine. Waste of money. As were all the other things we'd tried. Pre how : You smoke because you can. That's top and bottom of it to me. How: I realised that if I was stranded on a desert island and couldn't smoke - I wouldn't smoke and fuck all would happen to me. I wouldn't become ill. I'd only become healthier and i'd be too busy trying to build shelter, find food or escape to let my brain think of cigs. So I truly believed that I smoked because I could. I considered whether smoking to me was habitual or addictive. I read tons of stuff about smoking. The part that told me how QUICKLY nicotine leaves the body and how QUICKLY the body learns to do without a top up fix was what made it easy for me. Too many people think they are addicted and can't do anything about it. They believe that the cigarettes make them smoke and that they need it to get through the day. They really don't. Smoking is just ONE crutch but it's a crutch that KILLS and it takes all your money. Smoking is an adult's dummy. Nicotine leaves your body in about 24 hours. Not much more than that..... Once you've done that you ARE A NON SMOKER. You might try to light up cos that's what you usually do. You just have to replace that with other things. NOT FOOD. Stopping smoking does NOT make you fat. Eating more food does. So..... Day 1. I never lit up. * If I sat down and wanted a fag ( the two went together for me ) i'd immediately do something else. It might be just tidying the cushions / brushing my hair / untying my trainers..... ANYTHING to remove that initial thought from the brain. Cos they come thick n fast and you THINK you need a cig but you don't. It's HABIT. Not need. I used this and it really worked. Feel like a fag .. wash the dishes.......... feel like a fag ......brush my teeth...... etc etc. The times between the brain flashes got longer n longer..... I never think about cigs now. Also ..... because i'd read that each time you take a cig you are back to square one waiting for the 24 hours for the nicotine to leave the system it seemed so stupid to keep giving in. Within one day - 3 days my breathing was so improved I could feel my breath going deeper. Also the information I read about how your lung linings clear quickly let me know how INSANE i'd have to be to recoat them with tar. Another thing I did was....... if ever I felt like a cig Id do deep breaths through pursed lips as if I was sucking in smoke...... I'd do it while I walked or watched telly or was just sitting. It's amazing how that odd action made me think I WAS smoking or just took away the craving for a cig. Feeling like I wanted a cig stayed with me for a few weeks ..... but I kept employing the above..... 1. Stop those first brain impulses by doing something else. 2. Suck in now n then as a smoking sub. 3. Realise that you won't die and don't need cigs. I truly believe that if anyone smokes it's because they have accepted the BULLSHIT that they are a hardened smoker. Don't forget that companies are raking in the cash and need you to give your life to them until you die of smoking related disease then they can get your kids or grandkids..... Start now by calling yourself a NON SMOKER. Cold turkey works and costs nothing. If you do it for ONE DAY you ARE a NON SMOKER I never think of fags now. I don't stop visitors from smoking in my house tho..... if they are only having one and they are not there a long time. My regular friend has to smoke outside cos he's here all the time and would stink the place out. Don't go down the drug route. It's expensive. You don't know if it will harm you and its just ANOTHER MONEY MAKING DUMMY. You will believe that the drugs did it and not you. Go cold turkey ...... 48 hours and then don't go back. ..... There are loads of benefits but i've written enough to clog up the internet. I know you will do this. You want it. It will happen. x " Thank you. I like this. Very inspiring. And yes it's a dummy and vaping is too. But I guess weaning oneself off like you would a child is still better than not.

"Haven’t read the full thread, but my friend tried champix and stopped because of the side effects. She has gone into vaping as a transition. Hasn’t it also been linked with suicides? " I do recall there was a concern with this some years ago .. though would suggest the risk of potential suicide is significantly less than the risk of lung cancer and other health conditions associated with smoking! "I smoked for about 9+ years and it's been 2 years this year I've quit. I had to have my appendix out and was in hostipal with a grumbling one for 3-4 days before I got operated on and was put on a drip 24/7 not allowed to eat or drink incase I could go for my op, it was horrible. This meant i couldn't go out and smoke, as if they knew I'd been out for a cigarette they wouldn't allow me my operation. I came out of hospital and thought omg I've not had one for 3 days and Mr J said well no point in having one now just carry on and stop, it was so so hard going "cold turkey" but was the best thing I ever did and I don't miss it one bit, which shocks me as I really enjoyed smoking. Her x" bloody well done xx ![]()
