Ad we grow up, we pick up certain skills from our parents.

For me cooking from my mum who was a fantastic chef and baking from my dad, who was a master baker by trade.

Not all children are raised this way - many things to consider in this statement. my children have no interest in games consoles and always eat at the table. Yes they use the internet far more than i ever did growing up (never had it at home

) but it is the era in which they are growing up. My head was stuck in a book growing up I wonder if the generation before said similar things about us....?

My folks threw the best parties ever, all my friends loved coming to my folks parties, they were legendary,

My parents were amazing

The taught me manners, how to be respectful, to embrace love and happiness, that’s it’s ok to try things, even if you sometimes fail. Patience, responsibility and so many other things.

Decorating skills after being forced to sand, paint, wallpaper the house.

Also gardening skills after being forced to do a range of different jobs.

Also house removal skills. Surprised many people when I worked in retail, shoving large packages in their tight spaces.

When you grow up not having money to pay for jobs doing you learn quickly how to do em yourself

Will never forget my uncles pulling a tree out the garden by somehow tying it to their car and driving off haha.

I’m very averse to any basic gardening, decorating having being forced to do them but I can if needs be. Not the most fanciest skills.

Why they didn’t force me to learn to make clothes since they were both tailors, I don’t know. Maybe I am a fashion designer in parallel universe!

My Mum taught me the useful skill of incessant conversation - that woman can send any of her patients to sleep within a few minutes.

Actually, I think part of my curiosity and love of academia is down to her - she nurtured my love of books, of being obsessive on a subject and having to know eveeerything about it. My Mum also taught me that I don't have the looks to fall back on so I need to work hard.

My grandma taught me how to host, how to cook ridiculously over the top meals, the little tokens that people appreciate like their favourite candle, their birthdays being remembered. She also taught me how to grow fruit and veg, how to make sloe and damson gin, how to deal with many rescue dogs. My Grandma also taught me to be humble and grateful for everything and resilience. Without her I wouldn't have got my Masters probably. And my very self critical streak.

My parents taught me how to make friends. It's only looking back, as an adult, that I realise they were using me to make friends of their own!

Every childhood holiday memory rings with the sound of my mum pointing out a girl and telling me to go and make friends with her. It wasn't optional! They'd spend the rest of the holiday getting pissed with my new friend's parents!

I didn't live with my parents beyond the age of six or seven, yet when I very occasionally run into my dad (who still lives a few miles down the road) it's telling how similar our mannerisms are.

I basically hate everything I inherited from my parents and have fought hard to disprove the nature vs nurture thing my entire life, but sadly some shit is just ingrained in our earliest memories and, dare I say it, our genes.

They're both strangers to me, yet I share a worrying number of traits. I'm really trying my utmost not to pass bad habits and baggage on to my son, but it's nigh on impossible!
