Go to Russia if you were black?

It's a genuine question.

I have a work thing.

I'm going to refuse to go - I'm scared

I think you have every right to refuse if you feel threatened

Yes I saw something truly disgusting and disturbing about how the LBQT community are treated there

I wouldn’t go to Russia anyways.

But if any Russians read this and are offended I’m really sorry.

Keep sending the vodka.

I'd raise your concerns with work and ask what they would do to keep you safe.

But I guess I'd ask of you'd do the same if you were asked to visit the states maybe?

I honestly don't know much about the race situation in Russia.

I am of the same thought process

It is also why I won't visit a lot of Eastern Europe (outside of the tourist cities) and certainly won't visit any Islamic or African countries where homophobia is rife - and much of the Caribbean

West Midlands and West London

I'm not sure. And it depends with whom? My friend's dad is originally African and he says it's totally fine.

I think where in Russia and what the group of travellers look like will determine how you are treated x

I had a brief fling with Belarusian soldier (yeah, sounds like summat straight of gay porn right? )

He had to get out - it is truly atrocious for them in the Eastern Bloc

He lives happily in Hamburg now

The British countryside is a hotbed of intolerance.

First factor in where your going in russia, Moscow and St. Petersburg i dont think you would have a issue whatso ever theyre very tourist driven and very multicultural. Now if you were going to Tolyatti or Astrakhan smalleranti-Semitism and Tatarophobia is rife.

I know theres been alot of protesting out there from blm which prod the fire of racial equality as any protesting it always causes issues.

I felt very much the same as you when i went to south africa theres alot of racial tension but if your going along your own business your unlikely going to have issues.

There's a couple of trains of thought.

1) If black people avoid the country/aren't seen, nothing will change (I know that's not a comfort!)

2) Is the trip likely to only involve "safe" venues like hotels, conference centres etc, in large groups, or would you be expected to travel on your own, around cities with few others around you?

You shouldn't be expected to place yourself at risk. You may want to look at the Home Office guidance for travel to Russia. This is from within it:

"Race

Most visitors experience no difficulties but racial discrimination may be an issue and might vary according to location. People of Asian or Afro-Caribbean descent may attract unwanted attention in public places and should take care, particularly when travelling late at night."

A Black guy I knew married a Russian girl he went over a few times was an experience he said was fine when with her family. That was 15-20 years ago now hope would be better now.

It's worth pointing out that males and females may have very different experiences. Women's rights in Russia aren't in the same league as ours, so there may be additional challenges being a black woman. I say may, because I don't know for sure.

I would be reluctant to go to Russia full stop. Nevermind if I was part of a demographic more at risk.

I think for a white person saying what they'd do 'if they were black' is an impossible question, we don't have an effing clue tbh.

But more generally I think if you're visiting a big Russian city in an organised professional context you will have few issues. Russia is an extraordinary country and I think you should take the opportunity to judge it for yourself.

On a mooch

If it’s for work, speak to HR, line manager, travel security team for what they advise and how you will be looked after.

We always had a company member of staff collect an employee from the airport and they were escorted to/from airport, hotel, office.

I remember Reggie Yates did a documentary out there a few years ago.

Was interesting how outwardly extreme some of the views can be from some people and demonstrations he saw.
