It makes me laugh the number of times I've heard people suggesting we're under performing in Olympic or in specific events. I sometimes think people forget that compared to some of the counties we compete against how comparatively small our population is and therefore the effect this has on finding world class raw talent and _umbers of potential competitors we can afford to fund through training.

A Bronze medal indicating that you are 3rd best in the world in a sport that millions of people participate in (running, swimming etc etc) is a damned good achievement.

it fucks me off when the reporters/presenters say they must be disapointed in their silver/bronze when you can see to the person who it matters to (the athlete) they are over joyed.

Medals per capita puts NZ on top. Seven medals for approx 4m population. The Aussies so far have underachieved.

Exactly from population sizes and possibly GDP we should be comparing ourselves with the likes of France, Germany and Italy who currently have 22, 20 and 13 respectively compared to our 26. So definitely performing above expectations currently.

It annoys me when some commentators/guests forget its Great Britain and not England as they keep calling us. If thats the case the scots should keep their medals for themselves and GB wont have that much lol

This is interesting as this doesn't happen with other sports where New Zealand are rugby world champions with population of 3 million yet England still bang on about how they invented the sport. grrrrrrrrrrr

For the record I'm Welsh and we see it with football where we only have 3 million to choose from other nations have far more. It's just life

I've not seen the footage but everything I've read (including talk of retiring) suggests that she was far from overjoyed with bronze.

Would be very interesting to see a breakdown by country on the funding for sports at various levels (elite, club sports, grass roots,schools etc) and then to compare that to the medal tally.

someone said on here some months ago about funding saying too much money went on stadiums,velodromes etc for elite but these facilities are for all ages!,i used to go to use a commonwealth legacy in manchester to train on the velodrome in a beginners 'try it taster' session(cost me 8 quid and a bike supplied!)but there were kids of 8 1/2 years old whizzing round the track!,it was a phenominal site to see!.

the velodromes are not exclusive to elte riders although they do also train there but are also multi-sport housing boxing,basketball,badminton,netball,all for the nation.

sport england also help modernise the larger outdoor tracks and in funding safe road circuits for all ages all abilities to try the sports,this all helps for future olympians.

I think GB would be one of the highest budgets. Almost every medal we have seen this week, in Bejing and to a degree Athens is all down to John Major and the lottery. Those sports like rowing and cycling where from day 1 sensible bids were put in and success and further funding have followed have continued to prosper.

I was wondering how many competitors we have in our 'team'. Say it's a small country and they only sent 4 competitors but 2 of them got medals then that's 50% success rate. If it's say American team with 100 competitors (just a guess!) And they win 10 medals then that's only 10% success rate.

Hope that makes sense!

Either way I think we're doing great. I can't stop watching.

I know funding is high in the States but often not directly from the public purse. A lot of their universities fund specialist sport scholarships in some cases controversially breaching their own admission requirements to do so.

China put massive funding into limited sports for the generation expected to participate in the Beijing games but I have no idea if these competitors continued afterwards.

As for other countries I have no idea.

Ah but potential uk athletes have much much more spent on them per head than any other country.

Sue Barker had this discussion with Micheal 'forget his surname'(the ex american sprinter that bops his head from side to side) a few days into games when they were talking about Beijing final medals table.

the only time i have heard it was during the football, and tbh its an honest, easy genuine mistake to make, seeings as we NEVER have a GB team.

and, from the inter_iew straight out he pool Adlington was more than happy with her bronze.

she went to Beijing and overachieved, by her own admission, so was happy to just medal again.

Happens all the time. Bbc have done it, radios done it, happens on other programs. And it can't be a scotland vs england thing, gb has welsh and irish remember

Never cheered Murray, (nor Henman) as an individual. When an individual is playing for themselves, I have no particular allegiance, unless I like them. I don't really care where they were born, they are playing for themselves. When they represent England/UK/GB as part of a team, then they have my support. I actually think Murray will beat Federer today, as he won't be balancing the chip on his shoulder.

Well said.

Before the Olympics I was incredibly cynical about the whole thing. Having had to travel through London on the tube in a wheelchair (not something i'd recommend) I've got to say, I'm blown away.

Everything for the Venues, to the Athletes to the helpers has been fantastic. The coverage has also been amazing (and being laid up , I've seen a lot of it and not seen TeamGB referred to a English once)

I can understand why an athlete may themselves feel disappointed if they don't get gold, as they have set their heights so high, but in feel proud every time I see a British athlete compete, let alone on a podium.

And yes, we can't quite compete with the USA or China who, through one means or another, put so much into producing top athletes, but I don't care.

It's about seeing British people competing fairly, for the honour of competing, and not for cash, rather than seeing British people smashing the windows of shops and burning down buildings like we a year ago.

It's inspired me, I hope it will inspire others.
