So if you've studied art history you'd know once a artist is no longer around that price will explode if from a popular Artist.

16 million today. God knows what in the future.

I am not an art expert, but at least Banksy's pictures look like what they're supposed to be, not like that awful impressionism. However, I don't think Banksy's work is any better than many commercial artists, I think it's just his mystery and "urban" stuff that puts him a little above.

I once peed on a Banksy in the northern quarter in Manchester when I was very d*unk and busting and nipped down an alleyway, and it just happened to be there, this was just before his "Wall and Piece" book took off and made him a household name

I do like his art, but it's baffling how it fetches so much money!

I watched a programme last night about the performance artist Marina Abramovic, I found it eye opening as to what constitutes art.

That said, I like some of Banksy’s artwork, I like the stencilling and it’s usually simple and punchy.

Ultimately yes but it's the subjects and the way the pieces popped up that make it more than that.

I remember seeing his rats stencilled in the city I was living in in the late 90's. Had no idea who Banksy was then. But it was different to most pieces in terms of the medium and the message, and it stood out as a result.

The Banksy brand has become very lucrative for him, 99% of others would do the same as in his shoes.

the rumour is it its 3D from Bristol.

Manchester (he/him)

If you’ve studied art and art history as you claim, at least in any sort of depth beyond GCSE level, then you will have learned to observe objectively and critically, rather than subjectively.

Art is a representative endeavour and works when it speaks to people in a way that goes past the medium used.

Banksy captures a melancholy and distopic air, coupled with a dark sense of humour and undermines both society and art establishments. Hence using graffiti and his works being in public spaces.

I think that he’s brilliant.

You don’t like him, that’s cool. That’s the fun part about art, it elicits reactions

If I was rich Banksy 'art' is not something I would choose to spend my money on.

Any artist that has been deemed 'designer' including brands that sell clothing, accessories and cosmetics for thousands of pounds wouldn't get my money.

I agree with Tom it's a mugs game.

Anyone that spends ludicrous amounts of money on stuff think it makes a statement about them.

It does make a statement - they've got too much much money to burn and they've been taken for a ride.

It's a much better way of holding value than keeping money in the bank. Stuff like that just appreciates in value relative to currency all the time. So even if you weren't bothered about the work it would be a shrewd investment

If you want overpriced art to be upset about, we can recommend Derek Jarmans old house and garden (beach shack) at Dungeness. I mean there's bits and pieces there, but it's tiny, and a total of something like £2 million is being raised to preserve it.

We were very confused.

Exactly right, he is an opinionated artist. Not sure what the relevance of his chosen medium is? Or why it's a bad thing for artists to have socio political views?

The fact that you "just don't get it" is more of a reflection on your critical thinking skills than on his art.
