It's quite surprised me that my child has teacher as their preferred career choice, and to be honest it's never been something I've thought about.

If any teachers would like to enlighten me a little that would be great.

Is it something you've always wanted to do, or do you regret the decision?

What are the pros and cons?

Yes I guess teaching older children is completely different to younger ones just starting out.

I always wanted to be a teacher, did work experience, did my degree... not a career I want anymore. I also worked in an autism unit at a high school and as a room leader in a pre school.

Teaching isn't what it once was. No freedom for creativity. Lots of form filling and box ticking.

It may be for some, and absolutely hats off to them. But especially with other uncertainties in our home life due to husband's job, it doesn't work for our family.

I like a job that I can leave at the end of the working day and leave work at work.

Teaching is definitely a lifestyle.

Ok thank you, that is interesting, I do imagine that it can be quite emotionally draining at times.

I absolutely loved teaching and as my second career, I was so happy to retrain. However, with the introduction of the new curriculum, reduced PPA, more digital evidencing and everything else in between, it meant I was constantly swamped with not enough hours in the day. A great career choice if you want term time. However, there is a lot of work still to be completed over the holidays etc.

Yes I will have to point out to them it's not an easy option, though I do genuinely think they are keen to do it to help people, not just for the days off.

Not all teaching is the same. I work in international education, we don't get the long school holidays, just a fairly standard annual leave entitlement (30 days) and so it's much more like a non-teaching schedule. Happy to discuss more via PM...

It depends on what and how they want to teach. I taught as a self-employed person, which allowed me to do it in the way I wanted, on the subject that I wanted. CPD was my responsibility, and my client and myself were the judges of my success. I absolutely loved it.

Well they have a few years to think about it, but private tutoring is an option they may choose, as they do have a passion and talent for English Language and I think they want to carry on using that in a career some how.

teaching older children like teenagers is very easy.

you maintain respect, full attention and home work on time by having a very aggressive doberman looking at them from the front of the class.

My daughter is in her 2nd year at Uni studying Primary Education, she loves it and has always wanted to do it even when she was little, I definitely think it’s a vocation
