"The" wife

I (F) might be alone in this but I find people referring to "the" wife or "the" girlfriend disrespectful. I feel that you refer to "the" table or "the" chair but when it's a person and someone you care about it should be "my" wife or "my" girlfriend. I don't often hear people talk about "the" husband or "the" boyfriend though.

What do you think?

Isn't "my" wife more disrespectful? Implying ownership?

interesting. Possibly but a wife is able to say my husband too. I think the use of "the" implies that a person is an object that's why I find it disrespectful.

I was under the impression, perhaps wrongly so, that this a moer northern thing and not disrespectful just a linguistic variation?

in Lancashire

ones significant other and i call each other a cpl of nicknames which we have had someone ask us in public 'you two are a bit rude to each other'..

we dont think any less of each other in doing so..

if you and your oh are cool with how you address each other, why worry about what others say?

If one capitalises the words 'The' and 'Wife' then that elevates her to a position of importance, doesn't it?

'The Wife' as opposed to 'the wife'.

I usually address Siren as 'here, chomp on this for a bit will ya, sweetheart." and I find that I could pretty much say anything so long as I put 'sweetheart' or 'babe' at the end and I won't be wearing my testicles as earrings immediately afterwards.

Am guessing the OP doesn't like to be called a dirty slut as she is getting fucked if she is getting upset about being called 'The wife'

I sometimes wonder when you go quiet for a day or so whether perhaps you may have been wearing said earrings for a bit?

Oh no, that's usually cos I've been concentrating on getting into her knickers. After three years of childbearing/breastfeeding it takes a bit to get her natural lubes going (and her labido) but I eventually win her over.

I don't think my partner has ever called me "the wife".

never guess about what a woman likes and doesn't like it's a dangerous game to play

To people who know her, it's the bitch

But if I'm introducing her, it "my bitch"

That's subjective. I've heard 'the boyfriend' or 'the husband' said too.

Even though 'my' could link toward ownership. People who are happy being together usually don't mind. When people say 'the' it's obviously hiding some underlying problems. Then again it could be just a public front so that they don't come across as the sick bucket type in front of friends lol

Woking-ish

What about when your talking to others and describing the relationship of said person?

She is 'the wife' of john over there.

Is that ok? Or am I a candidate for a new set of earings as well?

Sometimes its a regional thing, sometimes it can be endearing depending on the way the couple is..... its only offensive if you let it be

Surely its the same as the way we all refer to cars, computers, whitegoods and anything that is expensive and troublesome, as "She..."

I'm not offended by it but 'my' is better than 'the'. I don't like the saying 'the mrs'. I think the term 'our lass' is quite cute though.

Mind you its not as bad as 'the old biddy' which I heard my youngest son refer to me as.

I (Pebbles) personally think that the best way to refer to the lady in your life is as an old boss of mine once referred to his partner, his name for her was Swmbo (pronounced Swumbo), when asked what it meant he said it was an acronym for :

She Who Must Be Obeyed!

I now live by that acronym with everyone in my life ... I am Swmbo!!!!!
