Am I getting old or is the working world getting tougher. I work in Construction mainly dealing with the public sector. And the difference in the working culture between the two environments is crazy. Don’t get me wrong a lot of public sector workers work big hours also.

That’s my moan over!

Some jobs are extremely demanding. Mr did a 19 hour shift yesterday, 5 hours sleep and another similar shift today.

If does seem to be getting harder but I think that's because we are getting older

At the end of the day though we have chosen our careers.

For anyone who isn't happy in their career then there's only you that can make the change.

I do agree. I just think employers expect more now.

There has been quite a lot of research recently that finds this to be true ... like spending a further 2hrs a day doing emails/admin from home, at the weekend or on holiday but all unpaid ... or extra hours but not counted as overtime etc

I've work 2 jobs, so 7 days a week for me. The week one is In the office granted so it's not to taxing. Weekends are landscaping so can be very physical, it's never ending work and no play. Can't do this for much longer, getting to old.

There's an element to this I guess plus the pandemic has not helped with most employers expecting the same output with less staff. Where I work its very difficult to get it equipment to allow those shielding etc to work from home and for over half the staff they cannot work from home at all.

Another thing is people don't know how to switch off anymore. One of my colleagues often rings me in the evening or early morning having logged on at home before or after going in to the office, talking to me about things I'll find out as soon as I get in again. She needs to be operating at a million miles an hour and cannot stand not being busy. I cannot relate to this at all lol I find it quite easy to drop my work hat off at the door and pick it up the next day (this may change as I start to work from home in a new role next week )

A lot of it comes down to the type of job, and what your employer is like.

If you're self employed then the boss can be 'simply the best'

In all seriousness, if you get in the right job with the right employer then that makes a huge difference. Some employers are take, take, take and give nothing back, and will expect unfair demands of their employees.

Other employers go the extra mile to look after their employees and will appreciate them fully. That works best as it's then give and take on both sides.
