Where did the forumites go?

on the road to nowhere in particular

I flit in here from time to time and while I’m away other forumites come and go. It often takes some time for me to realise that one of my favourites is no longer around. Who do you miss?

When I was on here before was a nice guy that was real into trains and was a virgin but he didn't let that put him off the site. I believe he got into a relationship in the end tho.

I just can't remember the guys name

Seeside was a nice guy, a little too nice for this place I think, *Just my opinion.

In terms of who I miss from the forum? Lots of those mentioned above. I'm kind of glad one or two of them isn't around in all honesty, the forum wouldn't cope with the love in.

Who I really miss? Forumites. All of them. The ones who'd post pre-Covid with hope, happiness, expectations. Share amusing anecdotes, less sniping because you could always log off and go outside or have sex. The tongue in cheek gentle mocking, the flirty (but not desperate for a whiff of dick/vagene) compliments. The debates that were less black and white, wouldn't result in insults being hurled at another.

The epic threads about men’s top-knots and that unintentionally hilarious one about how much they could bench press and muscle mass that became a metaphorical Willy-waving contest that was deadly serious to them but hilarious to everyone else. Halcyon days.

The people who like it make a big deal out of it. Just because you claim not to like it (yet seem to use it, however infrequently) doesn't mean other people don't care about those they conversed with regularly.

One persons bully is another person’s truth speaker or comedian.

There have been plenty of people on the forums that were lauded as ‘lovely folks’ that were manipulative, abusive liars in reality.

Perception is a huge part of the forums and some people, those mentioned included, were very good at twisting that. I’m sure that a couple were sociopaths, yet people loved them

Spot on...not getting into an "it was better/worse" thing but there's definitely been a change this past year as some of the old regulars have disappeared and others have come to the fore - the forums just feel more "angsty" now. There's always been an element of bickering and disagreement of course, and those forumites you either warmed to or didn't but these days it's definitely different.

It's the nature of forums I guess, people come and go and the dynamic changes naturally with that.

There are definitely those I miss seeing post, but likewise there are those I'm glad they don't post any more.

You always seem to be able to put my thoughts into words so succinctly.

I don't think Covid and the restrictions have helped with the forum dynamic; I guess people see the fora a safe space to let off steam, of which they are unlikely too in the real world.

Passed Beyond Reach

The forums haven't changed that much, the people have changed but not the genral dynamic, some changes because of covid, also chat. People love to reminis about the good old days but we ignore they weren't that good. One person's best forumite is another's worst. Depending on which side of the fence you're sitting on and each side will see the other side as the wrong one it is forum nature

The tongue in cheek gentle mocking, the flirty (but not desperate for a whiff of dick/vagene) compliments. The debates that were less black and white, wouldn't result in insults being hurled at another.

There are definitely those I miss seeing post, but likewise there are those I'm glad they don't post any more."

I think that an awful lot of that angst is down to the current crisis. It’s the same on all aspects of SM; people are short tempered and reactionary, using the internet as a vent for frustrations.

Once things open up and become more free, people will relax more and some of those who have left will probably return

To a degree the current situation plays its part and is only natural that frustrations with it come out - but think the "changing of the guard" effect comes into play too, now again to a degree the two go hand in hand as there are a lot of people who have gone quiet, or quieter, this past year but at the same time it's other factors too I think - a lot of threads are more "issues" based which has firstly given the place a more Mumsnet vibe, and secondly "issues" threads usually give rise to contention and disagreement.

Not saying there's anything wrong with "issues" based threads, they highlight some very important... errr issues - but they do change the look and feel somewhat too

As you say, as things open up hopefully a more even balance will be restored

I think that the only way that we’ll know the reasons is after and when we can evaluate in retrospect.

Personally I enjoy the ‘issues’ threads, mainly because I think they get to the heart of the human condition far better than others, although the light threads have a place too.

In my opinion, fab functions best as a connection between swinging and the ‘real world’, the forums are a microcosm of making small connections for current and future interactions. Without that possibility, it’s function is questionable, hence why the dynamics are different

I agree 100%, haven't met s forumite that wasn't full of him/herself, even nowadays I can name a few who are total idiots and yet people seem to like them regardless of the fact that they are mean to new forum users. And in all honesty, this place is better off without them.

If you don't have anything nice to say springs to mind right now.

Why are people using this as an opportunity to bitch about those they didn't like? I don't think we need to know how you feel. What are you gaining from telling everyone? It says more about you to be honest.

And I don't care if people think I'm being too soft and fluffy. I see no reason to be so rude about members who aren't even here to defend themselves.

Agreed.

It makes them look cool in their little circle.

Aggre unfortunately the ones calling the forums fluffy or about people who want to be liked are not the ones bitching about the ones they didn't like

"Where’s queeny gone ?

That's one of the forumites I definitely don't miss. If anything she should be named "dramaqueenie" ah never I liked her sense of humour sarcastic

She’s an absolute diamond, with a heart of gold.

There is someone called that but it's not *the* RubyWoo. She was also Anna Anon for a while to.

"I flit in here from time to time and while I’m away other forumites come and go. It often takes some time for me to realise that one of my favourites is no longer around. Who do you miss?"

Myself, I've lost the essence of me through all these isolating times. I've come off to try and find her again, but no use she has gone. I'm trying to get back into these chats, small steps I guess.

I think some of it might stem from what they know of their behaviour in private.
