"People always get my name wrong on the phone so used to it, doesn't mean it's not annoying though." Names are important, I agree - and getting them wrong persistently can come across as disrespectful! Nice avatar

"Whether or not it had irritated me I would not have stopped a meeting with a client over them geting my name wrong... Business is difficult enough at the moment, and I'm not looking to lose customers over something so trivial." if it was a passing meeting then maybe it would be irrelevant if it was a meeting with a client i am going to be speaking with on a regular basis then i would point it out. I get called Yvonne, Elaine, Rhianna, etc all the time but as i am on the phone i dont see the need to correct them however, if a manager or one of the clients called me the wrong name i would correct them.

"Whether or not it had irritated me I would not have stopped a meeting with a client over them geting my name wrong... Business is difficult enough at the moment, and I'm not looking to lose customers over something so trivial." Is it trivial? It can be a lack of respect, and if. ypur hoing to build a relationship wouldn't you want it to be on the correct platform?

And no normally I can get someone to call me by my mame without having to stop a meeting.

"So I was in meeting today, where the client could not get my name right. Now its not a difficult name, and he had my business card in front of him. I corrected him 4 times, and eventually had to stop the meeting to ask him politely to get my name right. Normally it wouldn't bother me, but the name he used is my dad's who for reasons I won't go into I cannot stand . Every time he used it I got uncomfortable, and had to say something. What would you do in that situation? " unless its a very uncommon name you must hear your fathers name used regularly surely? Business wise people who you are trying to work with deliberately use this ploy to see how you keep your composure when things irritate you. But if it affects you that badly you have to do what you do.

"I had this with a former boss of mine, he even had the cheek to tell me I didn't know how to spell my own name! " slightly off topic but hacks me off a tad when people spell my name wrong (like they did on my driving licence) especially after ive sent in documentation like my birth certificate when applying for it Even my pay slips were all spelt wrong.

I wouldn't want to be called it as I don't want to be associated to it. You know when you start a thread without thinking and then wish you hadnt? This is one of them! Lol

That said, you didn't actually say you stopped the meeting and ended it or that you lost the client, maybe in your circumstances your act of assertiveness was the right call.

"Well to be honest he didnt know your personal circumstances so it wasnt his fault it made you feel uneasy. For him to get it wrong it must have been a very similiar name. Was it important to the meeting that he got it correct or important to you. If it wasnt important to the meeting or he needed to get it right i would of let it go after the first time. If it was important to the situation i would have spelt it for him. But it sounds more as though it was a personal issue for you" he corrected him 4 times... it would piss me off immensely if someone still said it wrong regardless of what name it was or the personal apsect. its just bad manners or just ignorance on their part. to keep getting it wrong after 4 corrections means he just aint listening or he is being a pratt. Either way the OP is quite right to stop the meeting and tell him off. i have a surname that is also used as a first name and people commonly call me by my surname in error. easy mistake and first time it doesnt bother me and i politely correct them. carry on doing it and i will be more forceful. if the guy was in a meeting he should know everyones name, i make point of knowing who everyone is when i am in meetings.

"being honest when im in a work meeting im usually my full christened name unless its a informal meeting then its jac or Jacqui and yes sometimes when people get my name wrong it drives me potty but most know i hate my full christain name " I'm the other way around... in work mode I don't want people to shorten my name and I find it cheeky when they do. It is adding a level of familiarity that I have not offered. I reflected on the OP last night and wondered about short term memory loss on names. I have met people who just cannot hold a name in their head but can recite all the elements in order. It's not about lack of respect or concentration for them just that their minds are wired differently.
