Why do we do well in sports that aren't really sports ?

Rowing and shooting and horse riding and so on ?

Don't wish to take anything away from them for a job well done, but when did we last have a succession of medals in 'proper' sports like gymnastics and athletics for example ?

Have we got it in us as a nation to nurture an athlete such as Bolt ?

Or is it that certain countries do better at certain sports ?

Is it down to good training or is it a genetic thing ?

Ethiopians / Kenyans etc always do well at the long distance running for example

The former Eastern Bloc countries have done historically very well in gymnastics and so on

I know they're sports really

I would say that athletics in general and the running in particular though are the high points of the Olympics for many and are seen as the 'prestige' events

We've had a few winners over the years but it's not something we really excel in as a nation.

I'm sure we have the training facilities, but do we have the talent to nurture and, if we do, how do we get the best out of them ?

5k of anything involves the use of public transport in my book

as for meeting james cracknell, discussing his sportmanship would be the last thing on my mind

Have to say watching the loosers congratulate the winners they all seem to be doing so genuinely - the Olympic ideal
