Have you been to NYC and done The Sopranos tour?

My ex loved it - especially the visit to the real Ba-da-Bing and getting to meet 'Vito Spatafore' for a photo op

The ending was amazing! Took me a while to figure it out, though.

It truly was one of the best, if not the best TV shows ever made. The character development was absolutely first class.

There is only one TV series that does a very good job at giving The Sopranos a run for its money, and depending on the day, I have a hard time deciding which was the best: Gomorrah.

I've probably seen each episode over half a dozen times and still after 20-odd years I'm never tired of it.

I've also been listening to the Talking Sopranos podcast with Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa - aka Christopha and Bobby! It's very entertaining and insightful and a must for anyone who loves the show.

For my money Pine Barrens is a very funny episode but in terms of the show's full repoitaire it's not the best. College, Amour Fou, Long Term Parking and Whitecaps are all emotionally richer and artistically more complete episodes.

I'm so stoked for Many Saints which has been delayed for too long now...

Top post. I love that podcast too.

All great episodes you mentioned although Long Tern Parking is a tough watch. I don’t think the show was quite as good once Adrianna left, she was a crucial character to me.

So many people hate the ending. I thought it was brilliant! There was so much going on in the final season that the ending could be interpreted in many different ways. Maybe it was just our (the viewer’s) time to separate from the story and move on to something else. But I like to think the following;

In that final scene, Tony is out in public. This is really risky after the power struggle going on with Paulie Walnuts, Silvio in a coma, the FBI on Tony, and Phil Leotardo’s death. A war is breaking out, and the big guys are getting hit first. So there is Tony, sat in a public restaurant with some shady guy sat at the bar. The shady guy gets up and goes to the bathroom, the door rings as Meadow comes into the restaurant, and then the scene cuts to black for 11 seconds before the credits roll. I think that the shady guy was a hit on Tony and he went to the bathroom to get a gun.

In the season six episode "Soprano Home Movies," Bobby Baccalieri and Tony are chatting about the nature of death, when Bobby theorizes that death is simple, quick, and that "you probably don't even hear it when it happens."

The shady guy came out of the bathroom, and Tony caught one in the back of the head. The cut to black is Bobby’s theory of death come true.

For me, that is an amazing ending. There’s no resolution for the viewer, and it is incredibly frustrating, but that’s the whole point. The story was always centred around Tony. He manipulated everybody he spoke to and even Dr Melfi stopped seeing him because she realised that his Sociopathy had manipulated her too. And you, as a viewer, had also been manipulated by Tony. He was an awful guy, he killed people, he exploited people, but the viewer was still enamoured by him, and we loved him! But the truth is that Tony didn’t care about anyone else but himself. The cut to black in the final scene was a reminder of this. The TV show doesn’t care about the viewer. It isn’t there to offer a satisfying resolution at the end. The TV show is about Tony. When he dies, you don’t get any more.

Absolutely brilliant.

So good, watched this again and again. The characters are just so well written and the acting is unreal. The ending is the best or the worst depending on how you look at things.

Tony probably the greatest character ever screened

RIP James Gandolfini.

"So many people hate the ending. I thought it was brilliant! .... The TV show is about Tony. When he dies, you don’t get any more."

I felt so disappointed when I watched the ending for the first time. After building so much tension in the final scene to just cut to black seemed like a such a cop-out.

But you're right it's the perfect time way to end it. Whatever happens next the show is over. I personally agree with you that the shady guy shot Tony dead, but even if he didn't it's all over for him anyway. His crime family is decimated and the law is about to finally catch up with him. Earlier in the series Tony predicted the outcomes for a guy like him: either dead, in jail, or still the boss but giving orders only through a number 2. The third option went tits up when he suffocated his nephew, so that only leaves the slab or the can for Mr Soprano!

Whatever happened there nobody can say he didn't get what he deserved.

Agree totally, seem quite a few YouTube videos about the ending and I think you’ve captured it perfectly.

Also remember it also mimics The Godfather when Michael goes into the Bathroom of a restaurant to get a gun to kill the Police Chief.

On the famous ending, I respectfully disagree with other posters !

A hit on Tony would be walk in and out as quickly as possible, not hang around looking suspicious ! And a hitman would have no need to hide a gun anywhere; this only happened in The Godfather because Michael was searched before sitting down.

I think the whole point of the ending was to allow everyone to imagine it for themselves.

If the hit was ordered by New York then its likely they would have wanted it to be in front of his family as retribution for how Phil Leotardo was killed. This would explain the shady guy's hesitance as he would have known Meadow was due to join them.

I don't think a gun was concealed in the bathroom because as you say it was not necessary. However it is an obvious reference to one of the most famous mob hits in cinema so the allusion is intentional. Regardless of there being no concealed gun however, the bathroom did provide a perfect opportunity to approach Tony unnoticed and to "blindside" him for the hit. Not to mention the approach angle was 3 o'clock, which is a recurring portent throughout the series....

Yes to all of the above.

The fact that the series finished in 2007, and we are here still discussing it and trying to work out the answers together in 2021 is a testament to the brilliance of the show.

Remember when Game Of Thrones was the new steaming shit on the block? Who is still talking about that in 2021? Not many.

Also I think it shows the end was a good idea - we all still put our own theories on it but no one is right or wrong. Anything is possible.
