Support starts with governing bodies setting presidents. If the governing bodies of sport dont al fully support Great British team and are negative it leaches. Not dissimilar to a parent setting an example to children. Have a google at all press releases by them on how it would negativity affect players playing for national teams later in their careers for Scotland and Northern Ireland. It did target specific players too turning national opinion against them.

but this was about people abusing athletes on twitter and facebook....not about the politics of sports governing bodies.

People who sit at home on their arses watching the olympics and then suddenly think it is ok to abuse Tom Daley on the aniversary (or near to it) of his dads death saying how he had let him down.....

Hey I am not saying its right the crap Tom Daley has received especially as he has further events to do but some people are moronic. My point is that big governing bodies have been similar with individuals which sets an example. Not just in football It happened with one of the martial arts competitors. Not enough examples being set by the governing bodies for me all round.

its not the same though is it? the governing bodies have put pressure on their players not to play for team GB as it may affect future careers....that is undoubtebly wrong

twitter trolls being vile and very personal to people who have tried their best in a very tough competitive group is another kettle of fish all together

Did not the opening line read "what is wrong with some people in this country". Like I said its not just people sat on their arses abusing individuals governing bodies are culpable too. So in answer to what is wrong with this country the reply was that it starts at the top, if people see governing bodies show no respect to individual athletes then some people may think its ok for them to do so as well.

And you think corporate and governing bodies cannot be vile/abusive/troll or what ever you care to call it?

Its not the same but if it was a woman it wouldn't be the same if you are going to go to the fine points. So maybe its more the same than you realise.

Those sickos who abused our atheletes wouldn't have a clue about any lack of respect from any governing bodies.

i dont even know what that last bit means....i read the OP as if he was refering to the recent trolling on twitter 'what is wrong with people in this country' referring to these twitter trolls

you read it as to do with governing bodies which i think is a different subject, shall we agree to disagree?

I think it's something which should be looked at generally and not just if famous people are being abused. Many every day people are getting bullied nowadays online and not much is done about it.

Shocking how people dare to behave hiding behind their computers. Some of them obviously think it's in their right to be abusive as they want as they don't even bother hiding behind fake profiles.

You asked a question you got an answer no you didn't mention corporates or bodies abusing individuals but your opening paragraph is 3 questions no of which ask for support, then on the third gasp of breath you say we should support then end with Some people are sick. So if you are going to be specific 3/4's is about the people who abuse and then later you specify "faceless cretins" so how do you know its not the Scottish FA doing it! They may have a hatred of small elfin looking English swimmers!

On second thoughts the Scottish FA would do him up the kyber pass with some bagpipes

Seriously though people see the press, governing bodies and so on bad mouthing athletes in the press and they jump on the bandwagon and abuse someone else. They all think its safe and you can get away with it sadly.

as has been said, ron, some 17 year old in weymouth (as in the Daley incident) would have no idea what the Scottish FA has been saying to stop Scottish players accepting an invite GB.

social media has made it easier to abuse people without the fear of getting your face kicked in.

its for cowards and arseholes and people with complexes about themselves that they transmit onto others.

the systems that are in place to deal with them arent strong enough, especially for abuse suffered by nrmal people.

hopefully, the more it happens to celebs then the more it will highlight for people to report online bullying.
