"Excellent! Do any of you have thoughts on books? I think it would be good if it’s one that none of us have read yet I can recommend loads I HAVE read, but I guess we could look at the booker prize list that should be incoming soon?" Just checked. "Wouldnt the fairest way would be to get a group of who is interested and each month ,everyone get to choose a book?" That could be a good idea, if people had varying preferences. If there were lots of doom and gloom, or psychological real-life stories I wouldn't be able to read them. Maybe have a criteria we can decide on?

"Wouldnt the fairest way would be to get a group of who is interested and each month ,everyone get to choose a book?" I thought that this might be an option but it depends on how many people take part. If it’s a handful then that’s an idea, if it’s lots, then that will be difficult. I think that picking a book between us, then going from there, just to get the ball rolling

"Why not read extracts.... There are many available in PDF form. They'd be available online and no one would be excluded on the basis of cost. This could be important given that when a book is chosen probably only the 'chooser' will like it in any case. " That’s why I’m saying to vote. People can recommend books then we’ll vote on the choices and come to a popular choice

This could be important given that when a book is chosen probably only the 'chooser' will like it in any case. " I think if we share reviews of the book people can say yes or no to make it fairer. Cost needs to be a factor for sure else this is just another monthly bill for people.

"I just posted a book of the month from Hay so that was a no brainer. Bound to be excellent. But it's probably a £20 hardback. I'm fine with that but we should factor cost in. World of books and we buy books do second hand paperbacks for pennies. I'm happy to read my copy and post it on to someone else if they're on hard times. Loads of us are. That’s a good idea, I didn’t look at cost but that should be factored into the equation, otherwise this will just exclude people which is the opposite of the idea I'm glad I never thought of factoring cost in .. I thought I'd hit reply and quote, I promise. You know I love you too much to steal your ideas. " Behave. I don't really care. I'm just piping up at the back and dodging the mansplaining.....

"Another suggestion ..... Rather than all buying and reading the SAME book ..... People read a book of their own choice and then leave an indepth review of it for others or answer Q's on it or both. I’m not sure about that and threads like that have been done before. I hoped for a more in depth discussion and a connective experience from reading the same book Agreed happy to buy a book a month. If this doesn’t work for others maybe they can do a spin off that works for them. Otherwise it falls into the category of trying to please everybody and not working for anybody. Yarp Should we have a page limit and price limit? I don't think I could get through War and Peace in a month. Ha ha that’s actually on my reading shelf.. been there some time " I watched the film. So much easier

I've just realised I like Matt Haig already from Notes On a Nervous Planet. Midnight Library, Light Perpetual and Lanark are the standouts for my tastes. I never read much in War (all the light) or Crime (Pariah) genres so it'll be interesting for me if I'm pushed that way.

"What about Light Perpetual by Francis Spufford https://www.hayfestival.com/book-of-the-month-february-2021 That looks interesting, that’s definitely one to consider! Any other options? Liking the sound of that! Also want to read the midnight library by Matt haig at some point. I read his ‘how to stop time’ and really enjoyed that. I like this option" I couldn't finish 'how to stop time' but I have struggled to get enough focus to read this last year. This one does sound good though. I go to a book club and people out forward suggestions and then we vote. Usually pick a few months worth at a time. We also have a max of 300 pages as a lot of us are working mums and can't always finish a book in a month!

"A friend recently recommended Lanark by Alasdair Grey. Reviews are giving it huge thumbs up. Wow, published in 1981. I'd really thought I would have heard of this by now. He said it recently was back in print. I don't know why it has become a cult classic. I'm definitely intrigued by it. I'm going to buy the physical edition when book shops reopen. I don't really like reading on a screen. Shops ? Amazon ? It's my what am I going to do after lockdown dream. Walk around a bookshop with my sister and sniff books. Have you ever been to the Strand Bookstore on Broadway? A bookshop the size of an out of town Tesco with ladders to get to the top shelves. The smell is incredible. No! I'm going to suggest we go there first. Might not sniff actual books just yet though." I'm so dim, I thought the store was in The Strand in London
