Is it worth buying a starter motor from a salvage yard? Or brtter of getting a new one? Ive a 10 year old car im hanging onto

Buy a new one if you can, look online at Eurocarparts they generally have a sale on.

The inner gubbins of the starter motor wears over time so you don't know what you're buying if you get it from a scrapyard.

A new one might cost a bit more bit you'll get a warranty with that too.

Has the car been checked over and it’s confirmed it’s the starter motor needing replaced?

If so buy a new one if you intend to keep the car.

Typically they are less than £100, buy the time you’ve been and got a second hand one and fitted it, it’s no cheaper and chances are it’s down to bushes or solenoid that it’s failed (ie life expectancy) so you’ll be doing it again sooner rather than later

Your best bet in my opinion is an exchange refurbished unit, where exchange your old one for one they have replaced all the innards. It’ll also come with a guarantee.

Yeah I checked the battery and connections. Only thing left is the stater. It usually wotkd fine but does its party trick on occasion where it doesn't engage on the flywheel and makes a scratchy noise
