Having been a skinny minnie all my life I now find myself in the unenviable position of being severely overweight. 6 stone of fat needs to go.

So how do I do it, what do I eat? I need ideas for meals that are going to satiate me please. I know i should have protein, fibre, less sugar and bad fats but I'm just lost for decent meal ideas.   As for exercise I've been a couch potato for  years, I can literally can feel my body seizing up. All my joints are stiff, my back aches daily, I've got a large belly overhang etc.

I live alone and friends are miles away so I don't really have any face to face support.  So now I'm biting the bullet (instead of a bar of chocolate) and asking for help/advice please. Be kind please, I know I've done it to myself.

I welcome dms too if you don't want to post on here

Thank you

You could start with regular walks. Regular is key

There's a great weight loss thread on here with lots of support and advice.

Ultimately it is calorie deficit but also knowing what works for your body which is trial and error. For instance I have insulin resistance and so lots of cars such as is promoted by slimmingworld won't work for me even if I'm within my calorie goals.

I lost 57lbs last year, started with slimming world and cut out alcohol. I began walking 3-4 miles a day in March and then increases this to twice a day later on in the year. I am now running 7

Miles a day. It’s hard on your own but in long run does show a great deal of commitment and you will see the health benefits very soon. Good luck

In the same position as you where I've put on weight which I had previously lost due to ill health.

What worked before and is what I'm starting again. Is to make small changes gradually. So for example take the stairs instead of the lift in work. Go for a quick walk at lunch, park my car a bit further away at the shops. I do this until I can feel I take on bigger longer walks for example.

Eating wise I've found once I'm not sat my bum so much I inherently eat better. As I emotional eat far too much. Then it's again making small changes on a weekly basis that eventually become big ones.

I know that's not much advice but everyone is different and it's difficult to givd advice.

Following. I feel your pain. I honestly could have typed the same as you.

I've started on longer walks, a bit of local hill walking. Once a week to begin with and a daily long walk with the dog. I've done a 3 day fast and my tummy has shrunk and I've binned all the crap in the house and bought loads of fruit and veg.

Being out of a relationship now is helping with mine as I rarely have a big meal or get served a huge portion.

I'm hoping things start to improve

I would say to look on youtube for low impact hiit workouts. Stuff like Joe Wicks content. Of course a good 30min brisk walk a day is also ace.

I think it’s important to begin or work toward keeping a routine of exercise 4-5 times a week. A 30min walk 5 times a week makes such a huge difference

If you want to learn about weights and resistance training that would be useful as I find weights/strength training really help to lose weight faster.

In terms of food....everyone is so different. I would honestly suggest if you are able to, to get a well reviewed personal trainer to advise on some basics. Then again it is all on youtube too! I’ve never had a PT and learnt everything off youtube.

I always say to watch bodybuilders nutrition plans (female bodybuilders on there too) as they often have good balanced diets compares to random nutrition bloggers saying to have 500 calories a day.

Start slowly, rome wasn't built in a day.

Download my fitness pal and strata apps.

My fitness pal is good to keep track of your diet, you'd be surprised how much rubbish we all eat.

I just started again today, 10,000 steps or 5 miles a day throughout March.

I am splitting it into 2 parts before and after work.

For me cutting out sugary snacks and juice us the hardest, diet drinks are no use. I'm going zero, you get used to the taste

Strava app is good to keep track of your walks/runs.

2.5 miles walking the dog is about 50 mins.

For me thats 50 mins twice a day not sat in front of the TV.

Start small, cut out the snacking. Instead of a bounty or dairy milk hmm I know, grab fruit

Start tomorrow and post your progress, if you need any help post or DM. Happy to help

Good luck

And another thing, yes you may have to loose 6 stone, but even loosing half will make you feel better. Give yourself attainable goals. Else you may get overwhelmed and give up.

Whilst I never needed to lose much weight anyway as I'm very active I've found myself getting even more lean since getting a dog just before Christmas, I'm walking him four miles a day (short morning walk before work and a longer evening one after), so something like that or even walking other people's dogs will make a difference . Exercise is only part of it though, the rest needs to be done in the kitchen.

We found the ketogenic diet worked for us more than any other dietary life style change.

However we got their gradually via several other dietary choices.

Making other changes, increasing activity levels, cutting out sugars, alcohols, breads etc. can all make a difference.

Ultimately you need to remember its not punishment, you are not limiting yourself, otherwise you will never stick at it.

The other piece of advice is we stopped weighing ourselves. Water weight, time of day etc. all affect your weight. Go for how your body feels after doing exercise, how your clothes fit as a gauge to start off with.

I went from 17st5 to 12st13 a few years ago with no help. I simply didn't eat anything over 5%fat per 100g (my only concession was laughing cow light cheese coz the extra light was rank) no more than 15g total fat per meal and no more than 45g a day. It did require a lot of packet reading and weighing to begin with but I kept a log of my most used foods and how much I could have. I lost 3 stone in 3 months to begin with. Wasn't hungry. Then it slowed down.

This was years ago and I've only put part of it back on since stopping.

I've no willpower at the moment to get it off again but that's the way I would do it again.

I hope you find a solution that works for you. X

Batch cooking/meal prepping and portioning into small bags /pots helps overeating at meal times. I also now only eat off an 8 inch plate rather than those huge ones.

I find going it alone with weight loss really difficult, I need to be accountable to someone, whether that be a weight loss group or a trusted friend who I will tell my weight to each week.

Splitting it up into smaller, more attainable targets helps. Maybe start with the first half stone & just focus on that?

It works, I just feel a bit sick when I see huge plates of food now I defo couldn't eat it all in one go unless I hadn't eaten all day!

8"plates were the norm in the 60s I think, they've got bigger over the decades and so have the humans!

From the land of haribos.

The best way to start is to do it easy and that is to log all the food and to eat less and move more, then after few months doing it, create a bigger deficit, it will take a long time so do it slowly, it is about sustainability that is the key and focus on low calorie dense foods.

I used to be too - I lost 3 stone but my life turned upside down & I couldn’t get to meetings. Then anti-depressants & hormone medication were needed & the weight went back on.

I’ve recently lost a stone with the 12 weeks to wow app. I try not to drink in the week @ cook from scratch wherever possible. I love making soup & always have some in the freezer. Losing just this amount has made walking easier - I managed 5 miles 2 weeks ago.

Take 1 day at time & good luck x

I'm not going to add to the great diet advice, but just to say I'm a wheelchair user (I can walk with crutches) so all my exercise is upper body related or from a wheelchair. Doing seated upper body weight work with hand held weights will help to increase your metabolic rate and burn fat. Also look at chair aerobics, seated Pilates or yoga which you can do at the moment on the likes of Zoom. Here's an article with some examples (you don't have to be a wheelchair user to join in, you can just sit on a regular chair): https://metro.co.uk/2020/04/27/online-adaptive-yoga-classes-making-sure-people-disabilities-arent-forgotten-lockdown-12616677/

Sugar is a biggie. Coke is my biggest vice! If it is sugary drinks you think you are addicted to, sometimes it is bad to just cut it out. Lots of people cut out sugary drinks and pile on weight as they get their sugar fix from food. So cut down sugar and be mindful on what you eat.

With the sore leg. Maybe when swimming pools are open again it could be a great place to exercise. Much less impact on leg. But God knows when that will be

I’ve sent this to the OP, but as other people have said similar, I’ve posted this here so that others can read, if it helps one person, that’s cool. I have also edited slightly to remove self identifiers

five years ago, I was 25 stone or so, out of breath going up the stairs etc. My mental health was in such a state I was eating myself to death and just didn’t care.

So I was able to lose six stone in the next year or so, I still want to lose more but I am struggling. However, I can run three miles fairly quickly, around 9mins a mile and improved my fitness a great deal, having completed a half marathon and occasionally will run a 10K.

First thing I did was to cut out takeaways and fizzy drinks. Personally I wouldn’t recommend slimming world and the like as quite a lot of people relapse once the diet has finished. Your best bet is to figure out your average calorie intake and then to reduce it. For example, ticking over, my body needs about 3400 calories just to function. So I logged all my food with MyFitnessPal app with a limit of 3100, and as my weight reduced, calorie requirement reduced so I am now on a limit of about 2900.

Also, look at a couch to 5k programme and join strava to get an incentive to get out and exercise. Or join a gym or fitness class - it might be intimidating but i can promise you that you won’t be the only person there and you will get support from others there.

A few years ago I had a health scare which shook me to my core .... it was the slap in the face kick in the pants I needed.

It isn’t about diet, it’s about changing - and potentially saving your life!

The ‘no shit’ diet worked for me ... and still does.

Don’t eat shit .... do you really need to be told what is good and bad for you. Oh and ditch the potatoes, pasta, bread and rice... you can do this - it’s an adjustment.

Don’t drink shit .... again do you really need to be told what is good and bad. Keep water close to you all day. Swap sugary drinks for sugar free. If you like alcohol go for spirits with low calorie mixers.

Do shit loads of ‘phys’.... I too was very unfit, a couch potato. I started walking, I felt better, I walked further, and felt even better. I did a bit of jogging .. my legs didn’t like it.. discovered cycling ... and loved it. Now cycle and spin every day and do 100 mile sportifs .... the more you do, the better you will feel ... the more you want to do - cos you can!!

Oh by the way - I lost 6st and was tooooo skinny. I put 2st back, but am now as fit as fuck (in the physical not sexual sense) ... and love being that way - it’s a state of mind

Good luck xxx

Good luck OP.

It's fucking hard. I've always used food as a quick coping mechanism to help with my mental health and I struggle with binge eating.

I lost so much weight years ago with determination, calorie counting and walking but ever since I've had my daughter I've gained it all back. O.o

I'm down almost a stone in a month as I'm determined to get my health back this year. I've worked out my calorie deficit and try to stick to that.

I have cut out sugary drinks and have one maybe once or twice a week.

I make up little treat boxes each day that are 200-300 calories and that way I feel like I am not restricting myself and still have something to look forward to each day.

And don't underestimate the power of walking. YouTube has some amazing workouts too.

I think the most important thing is to believe in yourself. And remember that if you have a bad day it is OK, just start start tomorrow... we aren’t perfect and it isn't an overnight process.

I've lost about 3 stone and at first it genuinely was just from walking and cutting one item from my lunch but keeping everything else the same. The more weight I list the harder it got though and eventually I started lifting weights and restricting carbs. It was a lot of trial and error for me to find what worked and I had to keep adapting as I lost weight.

Here is another tip, did you know that 1 pound of fat contains 3500 calories? That means that if one burn 500 calories a day through cardio it equals to that weekly and with a slight calorie deficit is a good rule of thumb to follow.

Try not to get bogged down with this diet or that diet, this regime or that regime. Weight loss is unnecessarily made complicated so that people and companies can sell their “secret” programme.

Weight loss is very very simple - burn off more calories than you consume.

As someone said earlier, download a food tracker app on your phone, and get yourself a smart watch to track how much calories you burn. As long as the calories burned is higher than the calories eaten, you will lose weight.

" do you find porridge keeps you full? im having to have another piece of fruit mid morning as im hungry but maybe i need to eat more porridge instead?

you're right we will get there "

Yep it does most days but my job atm is sitting at a desk so not very active.

If I need a snack those Arla or Skyr yoghurts which are like 20g protein per pot and around 110-150calories are a good snack. They really fill me up too. Often 4 for £3 at asda or tesco.

Though if you want value for money and want to weigh out the yoghurt yourself, then the big tubs are better!!

"You could start with regular walks. Regular is key"

Start with this and only this to begin with for the first month before you start thinking about diet because it is more of a lifestyle change. Then set monthly achievable goal.

There are clinics that may be able to prescribe drugs to help you. I realise some people are going to throw their hands up in horror, but they are monitored closely by CQC and work to strict guidelines. I used them to start with to give me the boost of weight loss, then continued by diet once I was on the weight loss 'high', and my appetite had shrunk.

Edinburgh (She/Her)

Bin your scales!!!

Everyone has has said start slow. Walking etc. Calories etc. Reduced alcohol and refined sugar etc.

Biggest one is the scales....

Your body shape will change as you change. Weight does not always fall off, so people get disheartened.

Small goals. A dress size. Fitting into that pair of jeans you really like.

The little things that make you smile giggle and dance around the room. when you achieve it!!

Of course you could also get a Dominant to life coach you. Which I am doing with one individual I am in communication with....

Good luck in whatever you do...

Amelia

There is tons of good advice above OP, my 2 centsworth based on my own weight loss journey but try what works for you:

Number 1 - You have to be mentally committed to it above all else, no iffs no butts.

Number 2 - Always try to eat real food and not processed garbage/take aways.

Number 3 - Really be aware of sugar of all types and make sure, whatever you buy, you check ingredients and particularly the amount of carbs that "Sugar" - the western diet is full of added sugar which is there to enhance taste.

Number 4 - Never be afraid of fats, natural unprocessed fats - not processed crap like cheap seed type oils - natural fats will make you feel full up and not reaching for sugary snacks.

Number 5 - Walk - i tried to walk as often as i can.

Very best of luck.

Small but life-long changes to diet and exercise regime. You don't have to kill yourself

Don't try and do everything at once. Can start with simple swaps like changing to Diet drinks instead of full fat. If you have sugar in tea/coffee, slowly reduce the amount. Lots of small changes can make a huge difference without you noticing of feeling lije you are 'starving yourself'

The key is to make changes you can continue forever rather than crash diets

Also for sore joints swimming is amazing (obviously when re opened) I know it can feel really daunting being exposed in a costume but really no one looks - my 70+ dad essentially needs new legs (hips, knees etc are shot) but was able to swim steadily for an hour before lockdowns started and always felt it loosened his joints for the rest of the day

I am a dance/fitness teacher and totally appreciate different things work for different people however a few good tips...

Bin your scales

Walk 30 mins a day to begin with

Ditch processed foods and limit take out to a treat once a week at most

Reduce saturated fats and replace with healthy fats such as nuts/fatty fish/eggs/dark chocolate

Up your water intake

Don’t become calorie intake obsessed -try to cut back on portions , a good way to do this is to load half your plate with veg/salad, a quarter for protein element and quarter for carb element

Good luck and remember it’s not a race, you will get there xx

"In the same position as you where I've put on weight which I had previously lost due to ill health.

Great ideas, you forget don't you !

Consistency is the key, not quantity as to keep you motivated and not burn out. While walking you can listen to music, audiobooks, podcast or nature.

my top tips

cut out any thing that claims to be sugar free or zero - it contains aspartame which has many studies in US showing it keeps weight on & it also locks joints.

regular & same routine meals with smaller plate - fools the brain as the plate still looks full even though there is less food on it. sitting at a table at same time regulates when your body expects to be fed & therefore over time reduces snack cravings

have a small dessert afterwards, like fruit, yogurt.

sack all the takeaways and convenience foods don't care who makes them none are as healthily as a home cooked meal where you control all the ingredients. no convenience food/snacks in house means you gotta be hungry to wanna make & wait to eat it, not just bored

balanced moderate diet (by which I mean life style, crash diets do not work in long term ever!) - you need to find your ideal balance that works for you, i.e I have a high carb/protein diet but I'm bursting with energy constantly and I need it to keep up.

regular exercise and stretch yoga types with help with strength, balance and shape over time. should help with skin elasticity too.

when you think you've had enough do just one more, over time that one more adds up and you don't notice. I run by lampposts as my targets.

remember you will lose weight, plateau (which is when you need to amp it up as your body is building a tolerance to it), then you'll start to shape

weight - muscle is heavier than fat & can't be squashed so get your self some non stretch waist jeans, if they get tight but you can squish it in.. you know what to do

For me (Mr) it's been a case of eat less, move more. I haven't significantly changed the things that I eat, I just eat less of it, as well as cutting right down on my alcohol consumption.

I still have the occasional takeaway, for example, but limited to maybe one a month.

I dug out the WiiFit too, and try to do at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise a day.

Since the start of January, when I nearly hit 18 stone, I have lost about 20lb.
