how often do you check your oil ad water in your car?

had to put some new windscreen wash in yesterday (after a couple of weeks with none) d decided to check my oil...

.....ummmmmm there was none in there

i only got the car in jan, surely it should last longer that that???

so when you use lube, you apply some at the start of what you are doing, and no more throughout your whole session? lol

dependant on the state of your car, engine oil can burn away, drip out and whatever else.

usually check it once a month, personally

Was it a new car? Or a new to you car? Checking fluids once a week plus before a long journey is a good idea IMO.

mazda 3, 55 reg, not enormous miles but not just the odd trip out either lol

will become better disciplined (ooooohhhhh

) at checking in the future lol

apparantly you need to put air in the tyres also, and a top tip is, buy petrol and they give u the air for free, dont know if all petrol stations do this, but morrisons did, and i also played the damsel in distress card and the guy came out and did it for me

a friend of mine needed air in her tyre so she went to the garage to do.

trouble is she didnt know there was a limit on the pressure so ble it up to 90psi

Seemingly, all modern engines are oil burners so u should check often. I stick in some stuff in petrol car that helps engine if u Do run out of oil. Tiredness means can't remember name- Slick 50?

Not necessarily, my car doesn't need it's oil topping up between 20k services

Look at it this way - cars are expensive to buy and expensive to fix. Just make a habit every week-end to pull the bonnet and check oil, water, brake fluid, windscreen wash - all except oil are normally a visual check of their plastic resevoirs - oil is 30 secs work with the dip stick. All in all max two minute job

Weekly check of oil, anti-freeze, and tyre pressure, and top up screen wash too.

My engine needed a refurb costing a small fortune. Allegedly it was due to lack of oil.

Hence I check oil level regularly nowadays.

There is a light, when it lights up, you have to stop and top up with oil.

Apparently if you wait for the oil light to come on, you are already way too low on oil.

That's what the garage who arranged for my engine refurb told me.

As I have already said, DO NOT wait for the low oil light to come on before topping up with oil.

Use the dipstick, it is there for a purpose, and regularly.

I can't remember the last time I checked the oil in my car, I know the last time I checked the water was back in 2002!

I do refill the screen wash maybe once a year, but anything else I leave and the garage does on the annual service.

I will add that I do have a brand new car every 3 yrs so I'm not still driving the same car aws in 2002, but I agree doing stuff on the car is man's work so if anything needs doing between services I call the RAC

Interesting thread! Seems the the largest percentage of woman on this thread (and in general life) could not give a shit what is under the bonnet of their cars but when it fooks up they make the most noise and come out with comments like "When garage mechanics see woman they rip them off" Simple preventative maintanence like checking your car weekly would go a long way! And it's also an offence not to have any screenwash.

I normally check oil, water, power steering fluids & tyre pressures every couple of weeks of every other 'FULL' fill up of fuel, even when I run out of fuel and fill up my Jerry can of '1 gallon' equivalant to '5 Litres' of fuel, ( and at the moment costing £6.55'ish for '1 Gallon / 5 litres' of standard Unleaded.) or before long distances.

Im a bit sad really in a way as I always retrip the trip meter back to '00000' in my vehicles & write down how many miles ive done per 'FULL' fill up. If the mileage is down at all from the last check up I did, it assures me something isnt quite right.

Mind you, the normal

'Dead Give Away' signs to many motoring problems are:-

an oil stained driveway,

flat, bald or cords hanging out of the tryes,

a constant squealing noise coming from the brakes, that gets worse as you put your brakes on,

a squealing noise everytime you start the car up for a few minutes,

excessive smoke out of the exhaust pipe,

poorer acceleration,

carrying too many passengers,

or a boot full of crap / tools etc.

So If your witnessing any of these problems with your vehicle, feel free / dont hesitate to msg me.
