I've been doing intermittent fasting for a number of years, before this have I did various fasting longers being a 20 day fast.

Interminttent works for me as I'm very intouch with my body.

Theres no magic to it. It's just another way of restricting calorie intake by having a reduced eating window.

Works for some, try it see if it works for you.

Last lock down I did the 16 / 8 fast which gives you an 8hr window of eating and a 16hr fast every day.

Youre asleep for some of it so it's relatively easy.

I lost 35lbs (I put 5lbs back on recently I've lost the plot )

I counted calories too though Mon - Thur.

I also did a 10 day water fast years ago - that was torturous!

Yes, its something i try to do regularly.

If you are thinking of doing it there are lots of Youtube videos - i would recommend Dr. Berg as he has a lot of interesting videos.

All i would say is take small steps and do gradually, i went from a 12 hour fast and have built up over time to regular 48 hour fasts. Dont go mad at the start as your system needs to adjust gradually.

Fasting depends how you do it.

I be live the best way is to eat as early in the afternoon as possible and as late in the morning as you so fasting got 12 hours every day and not going to bed with a full stomach.

"Simple...has anyone done it? How long for? Worth a try?"

Fasting is basically controlling your window for eating, that’s literally all it is.

Doesn’t dictate what you eat, the quality of food or if you eat in deficit or surplus, that’s still all on you, so all it’s doing is reducing when you can eat...

so basically what ever your goal is, ask yourself if you give yourself a time frame to eat will everything else be in place to make it work, chances are the answer is no, because you wouldn’t be considering trying another ‘restrictive’ measure, hoping that’s the answer.

I’d suggest looking at your current lifestyle and choices and measure how it fairs up against what you want to achieve and make subtle changes.

Knowing how many calories you eat and what you should actually eat to achieve what ever your goal is, is the most accurate and measurable way to do things, then if you decide you want to hammer those calories in during a restrictive window have at it

Also, to the OP - i assume you have a goal/ ambition to achieve by doing the fasting as that may be important to think about?

Fasting, and then eating poor food during non - fasting days, may not be the best long term approach to better health if thats the goal overall.

I used to fast once a week on a regular basis but don’t do as often now. There are many benefits all of which you can read online other than just aiding weight loss. In general, eating a healthy balanced diet and regular exercise should be suffice for well being. Best to consult your GP if planning to make a significant change in lifestyle to ensure no complications.

Yeah a lot of it is all in your head being hungry. Once you get past that initial feeling and as long as you don’t think about it you’re fine... I went 8 weeks no solid food when I was a teenager to treat a illness I had...

To the OP and anyone else if you are considering doing it really research the right foods and how much to eat when you break the fast don’t eat junk your body will be craving nutrients

Type II diabetics are encouraged to do a 12/12 as a lifestyle but if you've ever had any kind of eating disorder then fasting is absolutely never encouraged and can be very very damaging

Best thing to do is actually talk to an expert nutritionist/nutritional therapist/dietitian and get starting off correct and also the best one/type for yourself as everyone will have their own favourites but not all suit everyone's life style

I’ve tried 5:2 but found I lost too much muscle mass. It was also quite challenging if you’re working out on your restricted calorie days. That said there’s lots of good recipes to help with the restricted calorie days.

I then came across 16:8 courtesy of Martin Berkhan’s Lean Gains site. I’ve been doing it for at least 3 years now and it’s very easy imho. I mix it with HIIT and some strength training (not a great deal) and seems to work well.

I have reservations about longer fasts (for me anyway) on account of what’s known as set point theory. The idea is that our bodies have a natural set point that can be varied to some degree by us, but our metabolism basically fires up or slows down to maintain the weight set point. However, when we deprive ourselves for too long, the body raises the weight set point. Consequently, what is likely to happen when someone comes off a protocol of long fasts is that the body has raised its set point so the body then tries its damnest to make you attain the heigher weight, ie you end up heavier than when you started fasting.

Definitely agree with this. There’s research to support the idea of having a healthy microbiome in your gut and the effect on things like insulin sensitivity.

I do the 16/8 although sometimes it’s 17/7 or even 18/6

I only have 2 meals per day, don’t calorie count at all. I will have a healthy brunch/lunch sometime between 12-2 and then dinner, no later than 7 (unless pre Covid when we could go out) I don’t often snack between either but if I fancy something I will have it.

This way of life suits me and I have lost 10lbs during lockdown. But I also walk regularly, do yoga & weights.

Not sure I could do a 24/48hr fast though.

Yep I do regularly without even trying, usually 14/16 hours from evening until lunch. Made an effort during Feb to extend it a bit and did a few 20 hours.

Got on OK so need to start again really, although I’m generally just happy that I can go for that long without effort. The joys of low carb / Keto!

I’d say it’s a million times easier when you’re low carb / Keto as you’re just so used to burning body fat for energy it’s much less of a stress on / change for your body.

One of the great ‘side effects’ of Keto actually, not needing to eat so you don’t recently realise when you’ve gone 14 hours!

I did 5:2 for quite a while, it works for losing weight, but also has documented health benefits too.

I would not recommend a three day fast, particularly as a first one, as the first few can be really hard until you get into it.

I used to eat nothing until the evening and then have my 500 cals for my evening meal, but everyone is different, and you have to work out what suits you.

I do not intend to fast but guess i do accidently. If i eat a big lunch at 1pm then i am not hungry later so will not eat until the following day. Also i work nights so when working will have a coffee when my shifts over, go to sleep and not eat until 5pm. I do believe this is what keeps me slim.

For me.... First 24-48 can be hard , especially the first few times, your stomach will try and trick you into feeling hungry and you will be shedding toxins so likely have a banging headache. Day 3 is better, no hunger or headache , you will have a lot of mental energy and start thinking/pondering about all kinds of things , time slows right down because your no longer planing and scheduling around meals, snacks and coffees. Day 4 you may make big life changing decisions , day 5 again and a bit weepy emotional. When you eat you realise you can taste properly - sugars and starches in carbs etc citric acid in tomatoes , you can feel proteins in meat , you eat much smaller and slower afterwards

Yep. It’s frustrating that people think it’s a fad diet, when it has well tested and documented benefits.

It’s also a lot easier than people think, even those who go shaky/faint when hungry. I thought I’d struggle for that reason, but I didn’t.

The only reason I don't use some sort of fasting protocol is competing in powerlifting.

4000+ calories a day in a reduced window is almost impossible, tried it and failed, strength plummeted.

When I eventually stop I'll use it in some way.
