Hot tub Legionnaires

Just seen on the news, a branch of JTL has been implicated in the infection of 18 people. Hopefully those who have hot tubs take note and act accordingly. Nothing like being sued after a party.

Hull

Legionnaires disease is more commonly associated with water systens where the water collects in roof tanks before being piped down to showers, baths etc. It is in those tanks that bacteria multiply if there is no tank or water cleaning or purification regime.

We have a Leisure Spa at my work where the water systems are tested 5 times per 24 hours; we have todraw out samples from all the pools and check them against accepted parameters. That way, you can check the water safety and in normal everyday use, as long as the checks are maintained as are the chemical dosages into the water, Legionnaires isn't a possibility.

So for a hot tub operator to be implicated in this way shows a shocking disregard to water treatment safety.

Absolutely. What worries me is that some owners may not be as aware of the dangers as they shoul be, especially so if they are holding parties and lots of people are using the tub.

You would know pretty quickly if something was wrong just by the look, feel and smell of the water.

We have had a home hot tub for about 5 years and I know my hot tub water inside out by look, touch and smell.

near the sounds of the wimborne quarter jack!

There`s a chance you catch Legionaires from your car windscreen washers! Because the water gets heated and cooled several times it makes just the right conditions for the bacteria to form and survive. Adding proper screenwash additive removes any chance of the bacteria forming. Washing up liquid will not do!

I avoid hot tubs and jacuzzi's at all costs

I was dubious about them to start with

Finding one with bits of poo floating in it kinda put the seal on it

And I've not had Kelloggs Choco Rocks since either

As I understand it, it was a display model, so had been filled and left to look pretty without any treatment.

We have one :D and people (women and couples and very special single guys) are always welcome round to use it with no pressure to play either!

we take our hot tub safety very seriously as we use it most nights,, neither of us want to get sick nor would we want anyone of our friends to get sick!

ita shocking that a place selling these things would have such disregard for the safety of its customers!

If you chlorinate your tub properly there should not be a problem. Water tanks and systems for public use should have their system chlorinated annually H&S

Central

Also be careful with standing water, in places such as greenhouses, where temperatures may remain high for long periods. In fact, any standing water may be infected, and the bacteria may breed very rapidly in high temps, such as over 20C.

Like a lot of things, it's the bits you can't see that you need to be concerned about.......

funky town

I'm a hot tub dealer and we take all this very seriously - including being trained on courses etc - chlorine and Aqua Finnesse do the job no problem - as for bits floating - take a look at the people who own it!!!!! We entertain in ours and regular water changes and new filter does the job well - it's like bed sheets - would you jump in bed with dirty sheets? Please pm me if anyone wants advice, chemicals or indeed a hot tub P
