Just to be contentious, I'm going to throw out that The KLF and Cardiacs were the greatest punk bands in history.

Where did you see The Ramones and what year. I love these guys. Lucky they were in the coolest of bands mind. If they weren’t in this band I fear they wouldn’t ever get laid. Cool factor 10 desirable faces -1

Lol I always thought In The City was a great album, one of their best but it always sounds like a Dr Feelgood ripoff.

All Mod Cons is my favourite and In The Crowd my favourite all time Jam track.

Ha I'm massively into music and punk/new wave was my awakening back in the late 70's thanks to my older bruv.

Those bands got me into Krautrock, British experimental bands like Throbbing Gristle, Caberet Voltare and early Human League too.

My fave album of all time is "Systems Of Romance" the last John Foxx era Ultravox album, an album so way ahead of the curve with rich synths and lush lucid guitars with abstract sci-fi themes.

British punk came a long way from '76 to '78!

Yeah totally agree, I think by the time '78 had rolled around the lines had really blurred between punk and new wave and it was all the better for it too.

Joy Divisions Ideal For Living E.P. has tracks that aren't there minute thrash abouts but they swore by the punk ethos.

Factory was founded and went bust by that ethos.

All credit to Tony Wilson.

Indeed, he did a lot for what would later become the Manchester sound with The Smiths etc.

Totally Mate, an amazing time, I spent my formative years in north Manchester and the music scene was ace, it all cumulated with the Madchester thing which I wholeheartedly took part in, some of those bands where so underrated and some where so overstated but who cares? I seen a few of these bands but Adverts broke up when I was 14 so never got to see them as I’m only 55. Caught the Clash on 16 tons tour SLF, Richard Hell and Voidoids, Lurkers, Buzzcocks, Banshees, Strangers several times.

Don’t recall that much of the scene as wasn’t that clicked into it at 14 living in Wales.

Its not the same I don't think. Today and for many years punk has been just a music style, in the 70's it meant so much more as it was based on ideals and a reaction to prog rock and social issues.
