(Mr) Potato Head - PC gone mad?

Read this in the news today: Hasbro has “reimagined for the modern consumer” (hardly) Mr Potato Head to give him a gender-neutral makeover. Mr Potato Head is to become the toy formally known as Mr Potato Head.

I read all the highbrow stuff

Is this taking things a little too far? Does having a “Mr” Potato Head or “Mrs” Potato Head cause anyone offence?

Honestly the toys are still Mr and Mrs. The designs haven't changed, nor has the actual name. The box just says "Potato head" as they've standardised both boxes.

It's a non-story. Either blown out of all proportion by gammons who's fragile male ego is threatened, or by the makers themselves to attract attention and drum up sales.

On a wider note, while it's clear that the majority of people end up happy in the gender/sex they're born with...and the majority of girls like "girl toys" and boys like "boy toys"...that's not always the case.

Destigmatising boys playing with "girls toys" and vice versa would be no bad thing.

My favourite christmas present in 1977 was a pink toy sewing machine. It hasn't stopped me liking cars, beer and electronics.

We’ve just had the internet put in here in Devon, I think we are getting electric later on in the year.

Yes, a friend tells me the internet is gas-powered down that way.

I would tend to agree about the dogmatising of respective genders playing with the toys of the other gender. The reason I posted was that my third child identifies as trans. When I mentioned what Hasbro was doing, the response was “WTF?”

I'm old and geeky enough to remember the internet before the web. In the 80s it was steam powered.
