Which do you own? Now that I have a garden I have been thinking of getting either. Any thoughts?

I have a cat, my daughters realy, but it was dropped on its head as a kitten by previous owner. The cats acts just like a dog and likes to play tag, fetch.

I would ask what are you looking for and what your lifestyle is?

If you're a busy person who simply wants a companion and someone to play with occasionally then get a cat.

If you have the time for a pet that will be dependent on you a lot more and requires more of your free time then get a dog.

I'd say dog all the way but it does depend on the time you can spare.

Definitely a dog, they have so much love for you. We lost ours a couple of years ago and it still hurts to this day. So be prepared for heartbreak x

Both are a lot of hard work and,potentially, money.

If no one will be indoors all day I would go with a cat.

You don't need a garden, they poop in your neighbours' gardens.

Dogs are better company though; they follow you to the toilet, kitchen, bedroom etc and they cry when you don't let the sleep in your bed.

Puppies chew everything they can get their teeth into.

Cats maul Christmas trees and chew electrical wires.

Cats poop in your shoes; dogs poop at the bottom of the stairs.

Good luck in with decision.

I had a cat that thought it was a dog once, It would follow me all over my village, ride in the open land rover to town and sit and wait for me. It came running when I whistled, and even used to come down to the beach and watch me go out in the boat....

She'd wait for me all day on the beach till I came back with fish for her.

She ran with my pack of Boarder Collies, I'm pretty sure she thought she was one!

I have both, I love both in different ways.

If you are considering getting either, I suggest you think about your lifestyle and suitability and research it properly.

The rescue centres are full, be a solution, not part of the problem

very wrong I have a chow chow, had one litter each dog sells 4 grand each, up to 6 pups per litter. Neutered job done

Have a cat sleeps with me on the bed, sometimes in it. Comes for a cuddle and a play. Until two weeks ago did have a dog unfortunately due to age and deterioration had to have him put asleep. Love cats and dogs.

The company, friendship, companionship, bond, and memories (the good and the bad) my dogs have given to me over their years is priceless.

Rather spend my money on what a pet can provide than waste it on alcohol, drugs, cigarettes/vape, whatever other kind of addiction you want to add in here.

Both dogs and cats are great in different ways. Depends greatly on your lifestyle and what exactly you are looking for in a pet.

Also like people, pets are different, you may end up with a cat that acts more like a dog than a stereotypical cat for example.

I have 2 cats that are more like dogs in behaviour as they are Bengal/Siamese cross so love lots of attention and playing with.

18 months ago I got my first dog - a sweet natured rescue Terrier from Macedonia.

If you are at home a lot then you can choose either but please choose a rescue - they are the best breed.

To be fair, your kids might not do that for you.

A pet won't break its bond with you without reason, they offer unconditional love. A human (potentially) will. Your kids may stick you in a home and never visit again, they may not even offer the respect to even put you in a home leave you all alone. Plenty of parents/grandparents that it happens to.
