"Does anyone actually believe that rubbish about the university using our profiles for a study, on another does anyone really care?"

In the early days of these sites Sidney University used them for a research project, as probably did others.

Thing about internet sites is the way they work, you are putting your personal information in the public domain so anyone can use it cos you gave "implicit permission" to use the information by doing so.

So someone came up with this legal message to they thought would get round this "implicit permission" legal loophole - it got copied and pasted all over these sites and still does, thought it is long time since Sidney University ran the research project. Rules have changed since the

But even today messages these days are fairly meaningless, cos by putting your personal information in the public domain you are putting it at risk to be used by others. Unless your information is used for a criminal activity, still have little protection.

Yes if it is used without your permission then you have an option to take out a civil action, for which will need deep pockets. Who would?

Should anyone quote me when replying in messages be sure that you will be in breach of this bullshit and will receive a strongly worded objection from my solicitor.

Stop reading this.

Now.

I don't know why, but in context it makes me think of Wagga Wagga, which has a campus of Charles Sturt University

Taken straight from the FAQ’s:

We've noticed a legal disclaimer paragraph that some people have on their profiles. Should we have one too? What are they about? Do they do any good?

The "legal disclaimer" is pointless nonsense and all does is take up extra space on our servers. Please remove it if you have it on your profile. If you're worried about privacy please set your account to be hidden from non-registered users on your privacy page (this also hides it from search engines but may take a week or two to drop out of search) and remove the notice (and encourage others to do likewise).

Common sense advice would be NOT to put any information on your profile (here, or on any such site) that could identify you or that you don't want to become public! So for your own benefit, don't post phone numbers, real names or email / instant message addresses on your profile that people might see or "Google".

Some people may put non-identifying pics on their public profile but keep face pics private or for friends, for example.

So, do what the FAQ says, hide your profile from public view. Websites give you an option to hide it from the public so that only registered users can view it. I highly doubt that any group of university researchers have the time, or man-power, to create a profile on every single website, just to collect data. Furthermore, any university conducting research by data capture always has to have the express consent of the source of the data, which then has to be cited, individually, in the reference section of the report/essay/research. The legal implications for the university are far too huge to conduct such activities underneath the legal framework. Have you ever had a university contact you to ask for your permission to use your data or pictures? No you haven’t. What’s more accurate is that some weirdo is saving your pictures and wanking off over them. To which, no amount of protesting or posting ridiculous disclaimers will do any good anyway.

Additionally, it’s always interesting to see that the universities in question are always thousands of miles away in Kansas or Sydney, or have some obscure name. You never see anything about the university of Manchester, or Sheffield perving over cock pics. The whole thing about universities using your data is absolutely sensationalist and it speaks volumes about the gullibility, and subsequently the intelligence, of some people.

There. I think we can put this thread to bed, now.

Sorry, o didn’t do a good job of separating the quote from my own personal view. My personal view starts at “So do what the FAQ says...”

Just for clarity.

Im starting to think the same as it does seem very silly to me, its a sex site, youre posting pictures to advertise yourself, i wouldnt be bothered even if my profile was being discussed in a classroom
