Foundation and concealer - normally I'd suggest getting matched in store. I have no idea how you'd get matched apart from that, it's tough. (You need to consider combination of your undertone - warm, cool or neutral plus if you have olive in there - and depth - how dark or light your skin is). Some companies (Cult Beauty, several mid to high end brands) offer online matching, but I have no idea if that works.

Foundation and concealer you also need to consider coverage (light through full) and finish (matte, dewy, or in between). In part this will depend on your skin type as well as your preferences. (If you have skin dryness or other issues, this might be an issue, partially correctable with primer, partly with skincare).

Colour correction for facial hair? Or regular "about your skintone" concealer? (I can't speak to the TV aspect of makeup I'm afraid)

Eyes - work out the shape of your eye and break it up into sections. Particularly work out where your crease is, that'll define any eyeshadow look. (Eyeshadow primer is your friend. The Nyx HD is a good affordable option, but look to others for colour payoff)

I don't use false lashes, I'm a bitch with naturally extra eyelashes.

That's a start, I think?

YouTube channels to look for - Robert Welsh, Wayne Goss, Alexandra Anele (all aimed at cis women, sorry, but channels with techniques that help).

Temptalia is brilliant for (mostly mid-high end) makeup reviews (how they perform), dupes, and there are some how to guides in there too.

Don’t put your lipstick on when you’re on a corkscrew rollercoaster.

My personal preference is MAC foundation with a MAC concealer but only use the concealer if I'm covering up a spot.

A good quality foundation applicator such as an expensive brush is worth the investment. Mine gives my skin a flawless smooth finish compared to cheap brushes or just using fingers to apply it.

Also depends on skin type as whether to go liquid or powder foundation.

As someone else mentioned, ideally you want to get colour matched in store. Need your natural tone otherwise it will look odd.

One thing many overlook, including females, is that it's a good idea once you get your skin matched to buy a shade/tone one above and one below your skin match. In summer your skin will darken with sun and in winter your skin will go pale hence a shade above and below. Works for me anyway!

Good luck, dont give up it takes lots of practice. Getting foundation right is the most important part of doing make up IMO.

Mac offer a virtual foundation match at the moment - haven't tried. I like their powder foundation, find the liquid quite heavy feeling.

I've probably tried every brand/ high end foundation out there and always go back to my trusty Revlon colourstay also recommend the eyeliner stays on all day I buy a few shades and mix them depending on what I'm doing or if I've tanned you can switch up the coverage with what you use to apply it like a damp beauty blender / sponge will give lighter coverage for other items you could have a play with revolution in superdrug cheap but do the job and can give you a nice finish

Contouring isn't a replacement for foundation and concealer?

It is hard. I mostly don't, but... cis female.

Simply experiment practicing to get the look that works for you. Speak to the beauticians at store when purchasing products and watch tutorials online...

I used to always use MAC products until out of work and switched to alternative brand which I found achieves the same look etc. at a fraction of the cost. Mac Studio Fix foundation used to cost me £27 and now I use Rimmel which costs £8.99. There are plenty other products on the market even cheaper, simply try and keep to what works well fir you.

Experiment with false eye lashes, mascara, etc. Is fun experimenting (remembering less is more).

Like most things, practice will make perfect.

Enjoy.

T girls talk about gloss a lot - I don't know why over other lip products. It's not high pigment, but Nyx butter glosses are excellent and inexpensive. Their lip liners are good.

I use Boots No 7 foundation, but they've got a good match for me.

Concealer and foundation are skin toned to cover imperfections and smooth skin tone. Contouring imitates shadows and is a darker ashy colour.

I'm not sure this is mainstream. You can do what you like, of course, and I'm aware of the contouring face map, but I have no indication that this is common or replacing foundation. (the woman in the video has very nice even skin, which will help)

Fair enough. I think it's quite difficult to do well. I think foundation (with a more gentle contour, plus highlighter as you choose) is easier (if you have a good match).

For contour I do the fairly standard figure of 3 when I bother, and add highlight to my upper cheekbone above blush.

Yes you are right it is hence the ump lumpa stament as if you get it wrong then it is a bad make up

And yes I would agree that foundation and concealer is a much easier root

It's worth experimenting for sure

But for the OP, let's start basic. Foundation in a good match, concealer in a good match (possibly also five o'clock shadow concealer too), with simple contour if necessary.

Goid makeup starts with good skin care. Moisturise and hydrate your skin. Use a good primer.

Makeup doesn't have to be expensive to be good. I'm a huge fan of revolution pro which is really affordable. They have a great range of shades in foundation and theit eye shadow palletes are pretty decent.

Understandably testers aren't available at the moment so shade matching can be difficult but there are loads of YouTube videos to help you right now.

Placement of contour, highlight and blush etc can really change your face shape as well.

Other than that it is simply practice practice practice.

Always use a primer to help your make up sit well. If your wanting a lighter coverage a tinted moisturiser is always nice. Tools really do help how your make up sits, I like using a sponge blender. And setting spray to finish. Xx
