Intellect is the ability of the mind to come to a correct conclusion about what is real or true. In terms of faith our intellect rely's on what it sees and experiences. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, evidence of things not seen.

By what resonates with me. Its a challenge to describe the feeling I have in my mind. As any other comes with some physical symptoms. The moment you come across that sentence in a book, which feels like epiphany.. when you listen to someone singing their heart out and you believe their lyrics. Frkm anything small like that to big beliefs around religion, politics, etc. There is instincts and facts we are presented with.. where we lack evidence, we can just opt in or out based on that inside poke! Or try and make sense from both. Thats the belief for me. Roughly...

we don't know what is true, we tend to believe what suits our current narrative.

That's what I believe anyway .

Some of the stuff I believe would have me carted off in cage on the back of a wagon by half of you on here.

I ignore what the leading scientists in that field think and go with my gut instinct, yes it’s a totally uninformed decision based on my own bias, but it makes me happy in my world.

So we use our intellect in abstract matters and if I rationalise something to be true then it is ? If I rationalise something is not true , then it isn't ? Have I got that right ?

It really depends on the facts presented....

For instance fake covid news. At the height of reporting it was difficult to believe all that was presented. I stuck to one source which I trusted

In the case of anything else it tends to be gut instinct with me. I will believe you unless you give me cause for doubt .... then the cause is lost

.

I don't tend to go off of feelings too often - it's far more logical and reasoned (or at least I'd like to think so)! In part that's because of what Nicecouple mentions above - we try and believe things because they suit our narrative, everything that could possibly supports it feeds into our confirmation bias and anything that negates it is ignored. I've seen that happen a hell of a lot on here (I've been guilty of it a couple of times myself).

Some people I do instinctively believe, others I'm very wary/cautious of. I'm also far more likely to believe something if there is evidence of it - did several people see x do something daft? Even that's fallible like the rest of us.

Yes if the rational is not be based on inconclusive evidence for you to have arrived at your conclusion. Second so not so sure since we do not have an answer for everything. Some things simply cannot be explained.

La la land

To believe is different from fact, something I sometimes forget. Depends on what the belief is e.g. religion or is someone a nice person.

Why to believe what I do? Depends on if there's actually hard evidence or is it based on word of mouth. People rarely repeat knowledge without accidentally adding or forgetting bits, or one persons take on an event will be different to anothers. Sometimes it will be past experience guiding my judgement, sometimes there's experts in a field so I can research and base my beliefs on that. I don't believe in gut instinct as such, I think that is just behaviour patterns you've learnt to recognise.

The way we are presented information is usually biased depending on the source so I beleive in looking for more information from multiple sorces then making my mind up by what seems more plausible, no matter how hard we try we are all biased by expeience in one way or another and that makes it hard to be totally independent in your views. We can only do our best and we don't always get it right.

Noboy can tell you what to believe or not believe. Part of your journey is to figure that out. listen to all and question everything, not follow one much engage ib many.

We only limited by the organic body and mind tat we currently use.

The same with religion and spirituality: "Religion is the belief in someone else experience, Spirituality is having your own experience".

gut instinct has personal bias - i don’t think its a great determiner of anything but your own truth

i think to get truth you have to approach things like science - start with a hypothesis then find sources to try both prove and disprove , this helps you challenge personal bias and remove it from the equation

It's all context dependent

What's it in relation to

Who's delivering the message

Do they do it with conviction

Does it seem logical

Does it seem plausible

You ok? Hope this thread isn't because someone betrayed your trust.

The simple answer is there is no simple answer. I would just say you can give ppl the benefit of the doubt on here and believe everything they say is true, without giving them your 100% trust. Trust needs to be earned over time.

I'd like to believe this, and it would be true if people considered all the evidence and every argument (on a given subject) but they don't, they are selective, which allows them to maintain their beliefs. If it's current events like sayncovid. You do your research and try and work out the truth from fiction.

If it's people then that is much more complex

We choose what we believe based on what we are thought first and foremost, what we have been domesticated to believe. Our survival is biased from parents, grandparents, books, friends and family beliefs. Beliefs have many nuances there is a personal, group, family, nation, world belief.

Just try going against a common belief amongst a community you are part of or family and watch how quickly you would be extradited or called crazy.

Belief is a survival mechanism and religion and politics is the best example.

Belief can be imposed and influenced also appearances are very deceptive and can't be trusted. Logic and emotion plays a huge part in how we see things and the ideologies we cling to.

BBW or Men or Women are ... fill in the blank and see what your believe tells you about yourself, better yet create a thread and type your answer without the influence of others scrutiny.

The key thing here is belief is a survival mechanism of the social environment you are within. If logic will save your life you would be, if emotional you would the same for the truth or lie.
