"You’ll never fill the five fingers on one hand in a life time of true friends " Well that implies that we'll never have more than 4 friends. So now the question ........ What is a friend ?

"A friend is a second self, so that our consciousness of a friend’s existence, makes us more fully conscious of our own existence: Aristotle" Great. He lived such a long time ago. What do YOU think a friend is. What conclusions have YOU come to ?

"Somebody whose company doesn't drain the life out of me " I have two of those. I consider them good friends. They have admirable qualities. When my listening resilience is low , I change the subject.

"You’ll never fill the five fingers on one hand in a life time of true friends Well that implies that we'll never have more than 4 friends. So now the question ........ What is a friend ? " It does imply that.. someone u trust, they trust u and are there for each other in good and bad times .... u understand them as they do u.. no hidden agendas ... etc

"This is something I've been thinking about. I have a few friends from online that I've never actually met in real life. Something has happened which has made me really upset for one of them, but I feel embarrassed to show emotion about it as I'd never met them face to face. Yet we have been friends for years and they feel really important to me, probably more so than many 'real life' friends. It's a strange thing. " I think it only seems "strange" if you allow it to be - she won't mind me saying this but I've never met Princess Peach and yet the friendship we have is very real, as real as any "real life" friendship, possibly more so in some respects as she knows things about me that my "real life" friends don't, she's someone I can turn to in times of crisis and she me, I hurt for her when she's in pain, and laugh with her when she's happy, just as much as I would any friend. Just embrace the friendship whatever the media it grew in, that doesn't matter, what matters is the closeness and the friendship you have found.

Leaving someone's monika off the end would have been stronger than implication but thanks.

You have connected mentally and emotionally it seems.... I cannot think why you deny yourself a response in that case. Pen pals have great connections. I don't see any difference in connecting via what is essentially snail main on speed.

I don't think I'm similar to mu friends but we process the world in similar ways. I wonder if its a nature thing or the fact we rub off each other over time.

I wonder if its a nature thing or the fact we rub off each other over time. " I don't think you do consciously choose people as such - life throws you together through coincidence, from there it is about finding a connection and things in common and a friendship growing from there naturally and organically. You don't necessarily have to be similar either, one of my best and longest standing friends is the polar opposite of me, yet we've been friends for 40 odd years and will be to the day one of us shuffles off this mortal coil.

"A friend can be many things. There is a massive sliding scale of friendship and if I were to define a friend thoroughly I'd leave something out and have to keep coming back to it. So, for me, in the very basic form a friend is someone you like, who likes you. I think social media in particular has rather bastardised the word personally." Yep to all of this.

"Personally I think Aristotle is way off the mark but he's entitle to his thoughts. In his Greek men only arena. " What you put into the universe is reflected back to you, so if a friend is a reflection of conscience, what type of person that friend is can be seen in yourself by other people. A friend is a person who uplifts you, makes you a better person without judgement. If you see something in a friend you don't like, person it is a a part of you, you need to change.

I think sometimes online friends are a deeper friendship because it can be easier to open up to someone we've never met. They can't really go gossiping around work or town about stuff you told them, because they usually live far away.

" They can't really go gossiping around work or town about stuff you told them, because they usually live far away." How long have you been on Fab now?
