There is a wonderful play on words blended together in my native language to create word friendship. It means something along "beside your consciousness".

I like that.

There and to the left a bit

In a nutshell, someone whose company I enjoy and who enjoys mine.

In more detail, friends can have varying degrees, some are a small step up from acquaintances where we'll see each other occasionally, enjoy spending time with each other and then go our separate ways till our paths cross again.

Others are more like brothers or sisters where I go out of my way to spend time with them, and make time for them, people I can turn to in times of crisis as well as joy, who I can tell almost anything to, and they me.

And of course there are all manner of in betweens to the above too.

So now the question ........ What is a friend ?

I have lots of friends. It’s one of the great things from being in the military.

Some I haven’t spoken to in years however when I catch up with them it’s like we’ve never been apart.

I can usually go anywhere put a notification on FB (other social media sites are available) and someone is usually in the area.

And we can chat about pretty much anything which is great. All problems aired and discussed. Then we go our separate ways and may not talk again for 10 years!

This is something I've been thinking about.

I have a few friends from online that I've never actually met in real life. Something has happened which has made me really upset for one of them, but I feel embarrassed to show emotion about it as I'd never met them face to face. Yet we have been friends for years and they feel really important to me, probably more so than many 'real life' friends. It's a strange thing.

I think it only seems "strange" if you allow it to be - she won't mind me saying this but I've never met Princess Peach and yet the friendship we have is very real, as real as any "real life" friendship, possibly more so in some respects as she knows things about me that my "real life" friends don't, she's someone I can turn to in times of crisis and she me, I hurt for her when she's in pain, and laugh with her when she's happy, just as much as I would any friend. Just embrace the friendship whatever the media it grew in, that doesn't matter, what matters is the closeness and the friendship you have found.

They are ones I don't have to see often but when we do there's no awkwardness you pick up where you left off. The ones who love you for being you, even when you're being a right idiot. They are rare and I value them a lot.

I don't think you do consciously choose people as such - life throws you together through coincidence, from there it is about finding a connection and things in common and a friendship growing from there naturally and organically.

You don't necessarily have to be similar either, one of my best and longest standing friends is the polar opposite of me, yet we've been friends for 40 odd years and will be to the day one of us shuffles off this mortal coil.

In a ball gown because that's how we roll in N. Devon

A friend can be many things.

There is a massive sliding scale of friendship and if I were to define a friend thoroughly I'd leave something out and have to keep coming back to it. So, for me, in the very basic form a friend is someone you like, who likes you.

I think social media in particular has rather bastardised the word personally.

There is no specific definition of a friend. It can be defined by what ever criteria an individual chooses, but for me it is , but not limited too -:

Someone for whom I am always there when needed, regardless of whether said person has put themselves in a position through fault or stupidity, and if that is the case I will make them aware of and understand that.

This would be reciprocal.

I have many acquaintances and people with whom I am friendly, but I would only consider that I have two true friends.

Bit harsh maybe but you asked.

What you put into the universe is reflected back to you, so if a friend is a reflection of conscience, what type of person that friend is can be seen in yourself by other people.

A friend is a person who uplifts you, makes you a better person without judgement. If you see something in a friend you don't like, person it is a a part of you, you need to change.

A friend is a two-way street.....

* there is mutual respect for one another

* you/they can be themselves without judgement

* they are there for you when needed as you are for them

* some one who knows you inside out

* some one you can share anything with

* someone you feel ‘safe’ with ( who doesn’t feel the need to talk about you to others in a derogatory way)

* some one who you can see often or not but it’s a strong bond

Acquaintance:

Someone I know, maybe from school or clubs, that I will chat in passing or on a night out, maybe have a few drinks with

Friend:

Someone I can confide in, laugh with, has my back and I have their, can show up when I am in my pjs and the house a mess and not give a shit. Can turn up with a suitcase and know they will take you in and vice versa

Frienemy:

Pretends all the above, blabs to others about your life and does so just for gossip for those who do not like you.

I think the last 12 months will leave many reassessing their ‘friends’ and what friendship means.

I was part of a social circle of 10 before lockdown. 3/4 of them have continually met up socially when we were specifically asked not to. They have also encouraged other members of the group to do so but they have declined.

Three of of us have remained in constant contact and value each other as friends... I suspect we will not be the same group of 10 going forward.

"A friend is like a lover or life partner, but you don’t have the sex with them, I repeat no the sex with them.

I fuck my best friend.

Hasn't affected the friendship.

I think I may have fucked all my male friends

Curiosity kills me "

This changes everything

"A friend is an uplifting individual who is there without judgment or reason, someone who gets you and accepts you for who you are.

Someone who life just wouldn’t be the same without x"

Someone you can trust with everything that you can turn to whenever ,who will tell you things straight and help you.

Someone who doesn't leave you feeling like crap

A friend is someone who you can rely on. It's unconditional love and trust. It's somebody who gets you as a person and listens. Someone who makes your life a little bit better.

I think sometimes online friends are a deeper friendship because it can be easier to open up to someone we've never met.

Yes, I made a similar point on another thread not long ago - not sure it's necessarily "deeper", just different and more open in some ways.

They can't really go gossiping around work or town about stuff you told them, because they usually live far away.

How long have you been on Fab now?

As you know gossips exist in the virtual world as well, and can be just as damaging "

Yeah I did do this at myself when I typed it.

I think I meant online gossip is different to friend and colleague gossip. I can delete Fab but can't block the knobs at work..

Under the Duvet

A good friend is someone who might not agree with you but always supports you. Someone who can kindly point out the error of your ways without judging you but also always fights your corner.

Someone who is there for the hard times as well as the good times.

Soneone you can feel as comfortable laughing with as crying with.

Think that covers it

Near Marlborough

Affection, respect, trust, loyalty, support and equality.

Each in varying measures but always present.
