Facebook v Australia

Who do you think will win?

A lot of Facebook users in Australia aren’t happy that Facebook has blocked users there due to a battle between themselves and the Australia government. This might highlight the actual power of these companies, depending on the outcome.

Who’s your money on?

Fight fight fight......

It's amazing that they can go to the effort of blocking an entire country and yet still have shit processes for monitoring online abuse

It does sound a bit like a spoiled child going home and taking his ball with him so no one else can play.

Some Australian Facebook addicts are panicking, apparently they can’t find the weather forecast...!

Princes Risborough, Luasanne, Alderney

it's not just facebook with too much power, it's big business in general. let the battle rage and hopefully government and big-business will erode each other to a size more manageable by people everyday.

"How long until some enterprising person sets up australiabook?"

Not at all long I’d imagine. Necessity being the mother of all inventions. It sounds like Australians are as hooked on it as the rest of the world.

As I understand it, the Australian government want facebook to pay for news they repost from news organisations. Fair point, they are profiting from someone else labour. It's actually a huge global issue, and the future of independent quality news gathering is at stake. Someone, somewhere has to pay, or it goes away. Kudos to the Australians for making a stand.

I think the mental health of Australia will improve if facebook disappears from their society, and it would be a fabulous experiment to witness.

I hope the government win. But facebook has more money.

It does. I can only imagine the outrage if Facebook was withdrawn from UK

So Facebook should be made to carry other peoples news and pay for it when they don’t want other peoples news on there ?

I don't understand the story. Surely news outlets have Facebook pages and that's where the news comes from. I haven't seen any Facebook news pages.

The people could easily win by simply not using Facebook.

Believe it or not there was once a time we all survived without it, somehow!?

"My money’s on Australia winning. "

But Facebook is supposed to be a social networking company not a news company and so should not have news on it that’s for the tv and the papers

Many of us still do survive quite happily without it.
