why do cat owners think its ok for cats to wander into peoples gardens and leave their mess everywhere, dog owners don't let it happen. if you have a litter tray , do they not use that - only asking as iv no idea.

got new neighbours with 4 cats, and my garden is now covered with cat mess - don't tell me they bury it they don't

I don't want to harm the animals but I need to do something soon

I know cats roam and do this, but can owners not train them to use litter trays, im guessing its owners who just don't care

Most cats do dig and cover their mess. I’ve never had a cat that didn’t. I think your a little unlucky there.

You can get some scents that you put in your garden that keeps them away. It’ll generally work.

Is this a serious question?

You can’t train a cat to come home and use a litter tray instead of someone’s garden. It’s a cat.

There and to the left a bit

Cats will use a litter tray if they're indoors and unable to go out, but they can't be trained to use one *instead* of going outdoors - there are various deterrents available but how effective they are I don't know - have heard tell the gadget that emits a sound inaudible to the human ear but able to be heard by cats is quite effective.

Best bet though is to have a polite word with your neighbours, explain that you know they are limited in what they can do, but that it is becoming a nuisance and would they object if you put out deterrents. That way you are at least making them aware of the problem, showing a level of understanding but also giving them an opportunity to assist where they can.

My cat does this when I've got the window open in the summer. Flat roof: fence jump, roof and in. I'm woken by purring and a wet pussy in my face. (Not the variety I'd hoped for)

You can't judge the many keepers of the huge numbers of cats in the UK, by your unfortunate situation OP.

Cats can be trained to use litter trays but training them to only ever use them is a much tougher job. Cats are independent and follow their natural instincts, including marking territory.

You can deter them. Cats are creatures of habit, which works in your favour. You just need to disrupt that toilet habit, so that they make a new one.

The unpleasant bit is to clear their mess away. Clean the soil too, potentially with soapy water, which will more fully help to clear their scents away.

Find their routes in to the garden and work out how to stop them - block, make them inconvenient, dirty them. They dislike strong smelling things, so they can be used at the loo area, or near entrance spots. Their feet are sensitive, so you can use unpleasant things that they would have walked on. Prickly etc isn't a nice thing for them. Cut some twigs that are prickly and lay them on the toilet spots. Roses etc are coming up to pruning time, so they could be used.

Oily gunk on fence walks won't be liked.

Whilst many plants are dormant, below ground etc, leaves more places that could be used. Prepare to stop that, until plants grow back. With use of barriers, making the routes uncomfortable etc, you get to interrupt their habit and they will find other more convenient spots instead.

Motion activated garden sprinklers are another option, for future use

It's not about whether the owners think it's OK for their cats to shit in your garden. It's what the cat thinks. If the cat thinks it's OK, there's not a hell of a lit the owner can do about it short of never letting them out of the house. You can't train a cat to do very much.

You need to get hold of some lion shit. Seriously, zoos sell it exactly for this purpose. Any cat will steer well clear of somewhere they think is the territory of a much bigger and stronger cat.

Scatter moth balls round your garden and orange peel or if you have a zoo nearby ask if they will let you have lion or tiger poo.

We tell people to spray our cat with water if they don't want him in their garden

I've got cats but I can understand how this must be annoying for you OP.

This might sound a bit strange but it worked for my sister when she had a similar problems with cats (and foxes).

Pee in a bottle and then sprinkle it round where the cats go (preferably when the neighbours aren't about!)

The cats think you've marked your territory and bugger off.

You have to "refresh" it every now and then tho.

Alternatively like someone else said use prickly twigs/holly where they like to poop.

Good luck!

To be honest there isn’t a lot you can do other than the deterrents you can get. I have 4 cats (3 of which were house cats for their first 5 years of life) the 3 older ones don’t go very far and even then they meow to come in to use the litter tray lol but not sure if they go to the toilet anywhere else.

This. I use the battery powered movement operated sonic sound device. It’s about 20 quid and used a 9v battery. It takes about a week (and you must clean up or the smell brings them back as they consider your place to be a toilet) but trust me if your patient and leave it in place it works. After a few weeks they stay away and after a few months the cats are into a new habit of not going into your zone (I guess you’ll have trained them yourself). I don’t bother putting batteries in mine anymore and they still stay away.

Cats aren’t what they were and very many people have too many.

As a gardener I know the problems with animal shit. Id advise a sprinkle with lime in the first instance as it dries it up pretty quick then you can dispose of it better.

Have a word with the owners or indeed get a cat of your own?

Cats crap wherever they want to.

No, it’s not because owners “just don’t care”, it’s because cats crap wherever they want to.

Yes cats can be trained to use a litter tray, and if they are indoor cats then that works fine . If they also have access to the outdoor world then they will use the tray if they feel like it (eg if the weather is shit), otherwise will go to their usual favourite spots.

Cats don’t crap on their own patch. Next door’s car uses our garden, our cats use the garden across the street.

And yes, cats are extremely clean animals and almost always bury their crap.

"well just got a very abusive disgusting mail from a cat owner, hoping horrible things happen to me despite me saying i didnt want to harm the cats, just wanted to try and stop them

Seems she thinks its ok for them to do this and have my grandkids get covered in disgusting cat mess

Tried to reply and ask why in a polite way without sinking to her level but she has obviously blocked me

"

If you know cats (and othe animals presumably) shit in your garden why are you letting your grandkids play in the dirt before checking?

Seriously though there is no solution to this. Cats roam. They are not as easy to control and train as dogs. There are things you can buy and do to deter them from entering your garden though.

I have no idea how to train them or even if you can, just that people said earlier that you can train your cat to use its litter tray

"As a gardener I know the problems with animal shit. Id advise a sprinkle with lime in the first instance as it dries it up pretty quick then you can dispose of it better.

Add a little umbrella to complete the presentation "

"why do cat owners think its ok for cats to wander into peoples gardens and leave their mess everywhere, dog owners don't let it happen. if you have a litter tray , do they not use that - only asking as iv no idea.

got new neighbours with 4 cats, and my garden is now covered with cat mess - don't tell me they bury it they don't

I don't want to harm the animals but I need to do something soon

I know cats roam and do this, but can owners not train them to use litter trays, im guessing its owners who just don't care

"

Not allways the case my cat uses my garden only! She pops out does her business then back in! Then it's a race for me to go pick it up b 4 the 2 dogs get there first as they eat it! x

Cats can’t get in everywhere. Mine is pretty impregnable with lots of plants below the fence making it very tricky for them to jump in.

That’s doubly unlucky then, one that doesn’t bury and doesn’t travel!

I’m still waiting for details from the person who thinks I should train my cat.

It is a tricky one. My cat is trained to use her litter tray and will in bad weather, but prefers to go outside, in our garden. We have several other cats go in our garden to. Most of them bury it.

Not really. Exactly as I had posted, you can train a cat to use a litter tray (easy when they have no alternative, when they are melt indoors), but if they have access to getting outdoors then they will decide whether to use the tray or a flowerbed. The tray looks good when it’s pissing rain or minus 5.

Other than that, as I posted, cats crap wherever they like. Luckily, they almost always means a nearly buried turd.

I have had about a dozen cats in my lifetime. All were meticulous buriers. This was not down to me training them.

Would prefer un buried Turds as nothing worse than working the ground as dont wear gardening gloves than coming across a buried one! X

No, they can’t be “trained” in the way they you are hoping.

A better word might be “learn”. They learn how to use a tray, and then decide whether to use it or not.

One of my cats was unwell a few years ago and needed some r and r after treatment, so we dug out the old tray and he used it exclusively. As soon as he started feeling better it was back to the rose bed across the road.

Dogs will do it if they can get through or over the fence.

My neighbours dogs have bulldozed their way through my fence before, then pooped in my garden, and my dogs have got into their garden and pooped before too.

If dogs could jump fences like cats can there would be more poop in other people's gardens.

... and none of it would be buried!

Unrelated, but a question that dog owners might be able to help with. What is the thinking when a dog owner bags up their dog’s shit and then hangs if off a tree or a bush instead of taking it home? I see this every day.

Yeah, if they’re not going to bring it home and dispose of it, then not bagging it at all would be better.

I’m hoping a dog owner can explain this to me, why trees by the riverbank always have bags of dogshite dangling off them.

Actually they say the excessive nutrients are not good for nature as most native areas rely on low amounts of nutrients. It really is a problem and leads to the proliferation of things like giant hog which push out the native flowers.

On the subject of slung bags, I find it unbelievably ignorant. I was at area of special scientific interest recently and there were slung bags in the trees. Plus fly tipped waste in the carpark. Unnecessary and gives me little faith in the ability to improve our environment.

Just scoop up the cat poo and hand it to the person who’s cat it is. That’s what I did.

Also, there are some high pitched devices you can get from B&Q etc that deter them. There are various settings, but if you’ve a dog it’ll send it crazy too.

unless you see said cat doing it, you won't know whose it is..

And cats tend to Bury it... other wild animals don't though.

Most of mine are house cats and even those that aren't seem to prefer to pop back I to use their nice clean litter trays as opposed to getting their delicate little paws dirty outside.

It's not that cat owners don't care either of they are doing it elsewhere. Cats roam, it's the nature of it.

And before anyone says its cruel to keep cats in.. the house cats in my house all have a health complication or disability. I have one who is pretty much blind. She can go out but only stays in our garden as she knows her way around it after a year of us helping her learn.

Cats can roam pretty far from home. I doubt they want to jump over fences and roads if they're desperate and miles from home.

No public facilities for cats I'm afraid and Dogs have their servants

Luckily working from home overlooking the back garden has helped! Siamese one. Only two on our street with that collar owned by the person who also has 8 other cats.
