Just received a call, automated message supposedly from HMRC, saying they have opened a tax fraud case against me. The message said to press 1 to connect to the caseworker, and if I don't, a warrant would be issued immediately and I'd be arrested shortly.

Even though deep down I knew it was a scam, I am still quite shaken by the call.

Reported it as phishing, and posting here as a warning to everyone. Please warn your friends and families, particularly the older, vulnerable people.

We've had that one loads of times. I agree that older people might be very worried by it.

I started a thread recently as my parents were scammed for a second time. It's rife.

Sometimes go through a spate of getting recorded message calls like that in the afternoon almost daily then it goes quiet for a while.

I miss the days when you could hear a human voice trying to scam you. At least you could give them some friendly advice about their career choice.

There is also National Insurance Number Fraud and a number of banks. And Microsoft support and BT warning about a virus or hacker attack. On some days I get more phone calls from scammers than real ones.

Basically trust nobody who calls you and never call back unless you 100% know who you're calling. If a cold called tells you it's fine to ring your bank etc to check ALWAYS,ALWAYS use a different phone to the one they call you on.

Microsoft will NEVER call you or ask you to call them from a pop up on your screen.

I make no apology for the upper case words, we're still sorting out the mess from where my parents were scammed

I’ve had that one too.

My favourite is when I get insurance chasers saying that I’ve been involved in an accident.

I say yes I was, it was horrible, there was carnage, multiple injuries and deaths but it’s ok I accept full responsibility it was my fault I’m very sorry.

One guy did actually laugh and say fair play.

I’ve been getting a lot lately supposedly from Amazon and always from a different number saying someone is trying to order an iPad from my prime account makes me laugh haven’t even got a prime account

BT called the other day to tell me they were cutting off my landline. I'm on a fibre from Virgin, so I just said okay and hung up.

Microsoft regularly call about the virus problem with my Windows system, which is strange as every computer I use is running Linux.

I hung up on HMRC fraud somewhere round about the word "fraud", on the basis that Boris is already giving my tax money to his mates, if they're going to arrest any frauds then they should start at the top and work down...

My house phone is one where callers have to announce themselves to a machine before I listen and then choose to accept/decline the call. I now get 0 cold callers. Only stored numbers in the phone get straight through.

I tell these that the ejector seat in my helicopter went off accidently, do you think i have a claim, the silence sometimes is deafening lol

Got the same call yesterday I phoned up HMRC and reported the number is it’s a criminal offence to pose as HMRC officer so hopefully they get arrested

My poor mum has been receiving daily scam messages and I also receive a lot. So, I e-mailed BT and said I want something done about it. They have a free service called BT protect whereby everytime you receive a scam call, you take the call, put the phone down, dial 1572 and it will block that number for you. You can block up to 100 numbers and then go on the internet and delete older numbers to make room for newer numbers. If we all get that at least on our landlines it will help stop these terrible people from attempting to steal our money and ruin people's lives. It's free just dial BT on 150 and ask for it.

I got scammed 11k by someone from Barclays Bank still fitting the case it’s been over a month they cloned there bloody number and I double checked to make sure it was that number what a fool I was

There's an email one doing the rounds again saying they have accessed your computer and have copies of your videos and photographs showing you in compromising situations, nude, etc. Unless you pay them they'll send everything to all of your contacts.

A family nember called me yesterday panicking as they had received this. She said she didn't have anything like that on her computer but was still shaken uo about it. I explained that it was just a scam and that I had received the same one but she still took some convincing to just delete it.

The latest one for me is a company calling saying they understand I had worked in a noisy environment. I replied sorry can you say that again which the young man duly obliged. I said sorry can you speak up I can’t hear you!

He used some Anglo Saxon wordage and hung up!

BT offer a free screening service. Mobile networks allow you to report scam numbers - they will get others but it introduces hassle for them.

I had one of those a couple of weeks ago.

It was clearly a scam as it simply said "your name" rather than actually giving a name.

Please report any scams you receive, not everyone will realise it's a scam.
