"My dear little dwarf hamster Vlad died 5 days ago from old age. Now reunited with his Brother Boris who I lost previously. They don't live very long at all, averaging 18 months to 2 years. I knew this, & that he was a very elderly pet, but it never is easy when you lose an animal. I have just prepared a honeydew melon as a mid afternoon snack, & whilst doing so immediately thought how I should save some of the seeds to give to Vlad as he loves them! Then as soon as I had thought this I remembered he was in hamster heaven so there was no point in retaining the seeds. All quite sad. It's easy to get into a habit & routine as far as pets are concerned. His hutch sits empty in the corner of my lounge, & I miss the friendly presence of my little furball. To those of you who have lost a beloved fur baby, & miss them, this thread is for you to share your thoughts, & tributes to your furry friends. Love Bella x " I'm sorry for your loss. I had a dog who was a little fucker but had to put him to sleep last year.He was getting on and his legs went. Its truly heartbreaking and like losing a member of the family.

"I objected to having a family dog for years. When I eventually caved in we got one and although he was a wonderful family dog, he was very much my shadow. He died unexpectedly after only 9 years. Sarcoma on his heart. Nothing could be done, even if we had known. He got so he couldn't stand and I rushed him to the vet. He died in my arms on the examining table with a stupid grin on his face, but peacefully. I cried like a baby and still tear up thinking about him. People said get another, but I couldn't imagine him ever being replaced. I have his tag on my keyring and his lead hangs in my man cave. That was about 10 years ago now." Awww

"It is heart breaking, regardless of the pet, so long as the bond is strong. The beauty is that, while you can never replace who and what was, there are many other animals out there in need of a home. Be it dogs, cats, or hamsters. Getting a new pet can be a way to heal, they help you heal. Far too many people go on about "I can never replace" but (with dogs especially) you are doing a very noble thing in honour of your late pet by rescuing/bringing home and caring for a new one. " Absolutely this! As much as no other hamsters could ever "replace" Vlad or Boris (Every creature is unique & has it's own distinctive personality & ways of interacting-communicating with you.) I am highly likely to look for another hamster to love & care for. They are delightful funny little creatures & I have had such lovely moments with them. I have already looked to see if there are any local animal rescue/ rehoming centres that have unwanted or abandoned hamsters, as I think getting a pet from somewhere like this would feel good. Sadly I haven't found anywhere that has small furries as yet. I have all the knowledge & experience needed now to look after such a pet, plus the hutch & accessories needed for their best care. I hope I can find a new furry friend soon.

"I lost my girl September before last. It still knocks me about sometimes but for the most part I can talk about her and look at her pictures. I struggle with her leads tho and they've been pretty much undisturbed since. This bit I'm gonna attempt to type now tho has me in pieces and I've already got wet eye. I buried her in her favourite spot in the garden, but I was freaking out. I knew she was dead, I knew she couldn't feel physically yet I couldn't have it make sense in my head. I wasn't worried about her inhaling dirt or any of that but fucking hell I was worrying so so badly about her getting cold and wet when it rained and being uncomfortable. I know. Anyway, I barely slept that night apart from half hour here and there where I was just so exhausted from crying that I pretty much crashed out. The next day was a sunny one, warm and t-shirt weather. I had been sitting with her in the garden and needed the shop. Half way to the shop which is only a 5 minute walk away it started to absolutely piss down. Not little rain, I'm talking wet through to your skin in minutes flash flood type rain. From out of nowhere. Got what I needed from the shop which only took a few minutes and started walking back. I was blowing the raindrops off my nose, my hair was soaked through. It was coming at me from every direction. The second I got to my driveway it stopped. Now, I know in my head that she didn't make that happen, but as I was putting my key in the door I swear if she had a voice she said "see mum, it doesn't hurt, you don't have to worry" " Awww Peach you've started me off , that's just beautiful

So I understand! Ps: i never knew hamsters would live 2 years max

""every hole is a heart waiting to be filled." Thanks for a lovely post Bella, you've given your little fury friend a beautiful eulogy, and it's brought some nice responses here too. The loss is sad but you can take comfort from knowing that you gave him a full and happy life. " Thank you! He was quite the pampered hamster as you well know. And the melon seed incident gave me perfect inspiration for a new Forum thread! Xx
