Paul saw deep purple a few years ago down the cia in cardiff .... he was worried that richie blackmore isn't part of the band anymore but said that the new guitarist was awesome.

This one is more difficult, just think of the vocalists that these bands had, Coverdale, Dio, Joe Lynn Turner, and Gillan, add that to the amazing musicians such as Glenn Hughes, and the sadly missed Tommy Bolin, and its really difficult. Probably Purple, but Blackmore is and always was a fabulous guitarist.

Near Merthyr

Depends entirely on the line up. Early Rainbow were amazing, so were Purple around '72, so I guess its a straight toss up between the Purple who released Machine Head v. the Rainbow who released Rising. Toss of a coin.

The "new" guitarist Steve Morse is an awesome player in his own right long before going Deep Purple both playing in bands and on his own instrumental albums. For me Blackmore is great but Morse is better with a more diverse technique and style.

I prefer Purple to Rainbow myself as I find Rainbow more commercial and dare I say it, concerned with hit singles.
